My husband and I saw Dr. Ducat for couples therapy for about 18 months. I found him tremendously effective as a therapist and am so grateful for his care. When we came to him, we were struggling with a complicated constellation of issues that was difficult to process or even articulate. Dr. Ducat is skilled in breaking problems down into smaller components so that the big-picture problems did not seem insurmountable. His approach is both pragmatic and sympathetic. My husband and I never felt that we were "at fault" for the problems in our marriage, but rather, that there were different ways for each of us to communicate and support one another that would move our relationship forward in a positive direction. I love his collaborative, holistic approach and, when needed, his willingness to call us out occasional. His tone is smart, warm, and funny, and I love his deep knowledge of tv and film. A truly skilled doctor.

Stephen J. Ducat, N.D., Ph.D., is a naturopathic doctor and clinical psychologist, licensed in both professions in California, with offices in San Francisco and Marin. He obtained his ND from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and received his PhD from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California. Dr. Ducat is also a certified psychoanalyst who graduated from the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC). In addition, he obtained his certification in functional medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine.
Specializing in integrative mental health, his aim is to bring together the best of a relational approach to psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis with a functional and natural medicine orientation to neurochemistry. He believes that by simultaneously attending to how patients metabolize the world psychologically as well as nutritionally, psychiatric conditions can be addressed in the most holistic manner possible.
With regard to the psychotherapy component of his work, Dr. Ducat has been treating couples as well as individual adults for over 20 years. Prior to his formal psychoanalytic education at PINC, he spent three years in a couples psychotherapy training program sponsored by the Tavistock Institute of London.
Dr. Ducat lives in Marin County, California with his family, where he runs the trails with his trusted canine collaborator, Riley.

I appreciate Dr. Ducat's professionalism and sensitivity when addressing my concerns. One objective was to reduce my dependence on using Effexor, a medication used to treat anxiety and depression. Dr. Ducat suggested that I "titrate down" on the medication while titrating up on various integrative approaches, which included optimizing my diet and correcting my low thyroid function. For example, for the Effexor he recommended a compounding pharmacy and they were able to create capsules in smaller doses than in the original medication. Because each capsule contained less medication I was able to take a smaller amount each day; reducing the total medication each week. I continued reducing the quantity every week until no medication remained. This allowed me to avoid having negative symptoms throughout the titration period.
