About Dr. Stephen Kominsky

Dr. Stephen Kominsky was the first podiatrist to participate in the prestigious Fellowship at Carville, Louisiana, under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Brand, the world-renowned authority on diabetic foot care and Hansen’s disease. This formative experience led him to become one of the three original founders of the Foot Care Council of the American Diabetes Association. A pioneer in diabetic wound care, Dr. Kominsky was one of only two podiatrists whose research and clinical data helped bring recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) gel—commercially known as Regranex—to market. He also worked closely with Osiris Therapeutics in developing Grafix, a product designed specifically for diabetic foot ulcers, and collaborated with Organogenesis on the development of Apligraf, a breakthrough bioengineered skin substitute. Additionally, he is the editor and contributing author of Medical and Surgical Management of the Diabetic Foot, widely recognized as the “bible” of diabetic foot care. This comprehensive textbook includes contributions from the world’s leading experts in limb salvage and wound management and reflects his lifelong commitment to limb preservation. As the Founder and Director of the Podiatric Surgical Residency Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., he has played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of podiatric surgeons. His training emphasizes diabetic limb salvage, wound care, trauma, reconstructive surgery, and forefoot deformities. Dr Kominsky is board certified in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Affectionately known as “Dr. K,” he has lectured extensively around the world, sharing innovative wound care protocols and contributing to the advancement of global standards in diabetic foot management, surgical reconstruction, and podiatric surgical techniques.
