Dr. Perera is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He completed his Psychiatric Residency at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Dr. Perera is internationally recognized as an expert in TMS. He founded Contemporary Care of Greenwich, which quickly became one of the leading TMS practices in the country. Following this success, he embarked on establishing several satellite clinics that provide the same high quality of TMS across the northeast region, from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. He is the Founding President of the Clinical TMS Society. The Society is the leading authority in TMS, with members including the leading experts from all six continents. Dr. Perera was the first author on the official TMS guidelines published by the society in 2016.
After his residency, Dr. Perera was a Research Fellow, and then became an Assistant Professor at Columbia University conducting research on the neurobiological mechanisms of Major Depression. His work, for which he received several awards and grants, demonstrated that stimulation of new neurons (neurogenesis) in the hippocampus was critical for treating depression. In addition, Dr. Perera became involved in early research on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy in psychiatric disorders.Dr. Perera continues his research and is currently involved in a study examining the benefits of neuroimaging-guided TMS for depression, which is also in collaboration with Columbia University.
Besides medication management, Dr. Perera is an expert in brain stimulation techniques. He is a lecturer at Columbia University’s Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) course for ECT practitioners across the globe.
