More about Dr. Thomas Mounsey, PhD

Tom Mounsey, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience working individually with clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, and difficult life transitions, such as loss and adjustment to medical illness. Additionally, he has specializations in targeted treatments for eating disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His training has involved working with diverse populations across the lifespan, including veterans, older adults, and adolescents. He believes in a collaborative and empathic approach that is both practical and supportive. He views therapy as a process of development, built from a space where you can express yourself without judgment, exploring difficult topics to make changes to live a more authentic and fulfilled life. He became a therapist in part from knowing the damaging effects of stigma and shame on mental health, and the many challenges present in overcoming this. Dr. Mounsey's training is multifaceted and includes a variety of disciplines: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In his approach, Dr. Mounsey aims to balance current relief with a deeper understanding of where our difficulties stem from, combining insight of longstanding patterns with challenges to make changes in the present. Therapy is often an intense process, no matter what you are struggling with, and he works from a collaborative and empathic approach with clients to set their own pace.
