More about Dr. Vernon Smith, PhD

Psychotherapy, in my view, is a collaborative and evolving process. As a result, I use a variety of approaches to help clients improve their mood and further clarify and achieve their personal goals. Working to reduce conflict may improve satisfaction and increase well-being, love, strength, and resilience. Gaining clarity on the positive qualities of one’s self and one’s important relationships can decrease stress, increase motivation, and improve self-care. Therapy requires a commitment to examine one’s past and present thoughts, emotions and actions in order to take steps to do some things differently. Improving one’s ability to acknowledge and communicate important aspects of one’s self is a central part of that process. I have almost twenty years of graduate, post-graduate and professional experience in psychotherapy and psychological testing. I received a B.A. in Psychology from Temple University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. My internship and post-doctoral fellowship training was at Pennsylvania Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. My education, clinical training and psychotherapy practice has been focused primarily on adolescent and adult individual psychotherapy; personality and mental health research; and psychological and psycho-educational testing. In addition to my clinical practice, I have experience in supervising clinical psychology doctoral students in their psychotherapy and psychological testing work. My adolescent clients typically present with mood and academic achievement difficulties. Individual adult clients usually seek me out to improve their sense of self-worth, as well as help them identify and remove barriers to career and relationship success. Couples facing critical decisions in their relationship, for example the prospects of marriage and communication-related conflicts, seek me out to help help them identify their relationships strengths and weaknesses. Psycho-educational testing can be done with children, adolescents, and adults who need additional information about AHDH, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and learning disorders and any other aspect of psycho-educational functioning. Additionally, I am trained and experienced in evaluating members of each of these client groups for neuropsychological disorders.
