Durwood Whitten, PhD is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist who specializes in individual psychotherapy for people suffering from trauma, anxiety, and depression. He has had extensive experience working with a variety of clients including war veterans, victims of violent crime, and those diagnosed with personality disorders. Dr. Whitten's experience includes adult men and women, adolescents, and children as young as 6 years of age. One of his primary clinical interests is helping parents who may be struggling with challenging parental issues. Dr. Whitten has had great success in counseling couples to reconcile who were on the brink of separation.
Dr. Whitten began his mental health career performing psychological consultations in the Emergency Room for inpatient psychiatry. From there, Dr. Whitten went on to work for a large group practice performing psychological evaluations on children and adults for cases in the Department of Social Services and as referrals from other mental health professionals. He spent a year on the army base at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, conducting psychotherapy for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Dr. Whitten furthered his mental health career by working for the Division of Corrections of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Eventually, he served as the chief clinical administrator of the Maryland state mental health inpatient prison. Today Dr. Whitten is the principle partner of Complete Wellness, Inc. and serves as a faculty associate for Johns Hopkins University in the Clinical Community Counseling graduate program.
