Xuyan Shi practiced as a nurse and a midwife in China for over twelve years before entering the nurse-midwifery program at the University of Michigan in 2022 and completed program date as 04/2024. She is the 2023 recipient of the Gateways Fellows Scholarship from the U-M School of Nursing (UMSN) and of the 2023 Midwives of Color – Watson Midwifery Student Scholarship from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. The fellowship that Xuyan has earned from CEW+ will be used to fund a clinical immersion midwifery program in northern Uganda. This is an annual program led by Dr. Ruth Zielinski, Clinical Professor of Nursing and Midwifery Graduate Program Lead in the UMSN. After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the program resumed in 2023, targeting Olua and Mungula refugee settlements in Northern Uganda, along with Adjumani hospital. These areas face significant healthcare challenges, particularly in women and newborn healthcare. The program aims to address this by providing picture-based doula training to women in the community, empowering them with the necessary skills for better labor support. As the program continues to make a positive change in the region, nursing midwifery students from UMSN like Xuyan eagerly anticipate the opportunity to contribute to improving women and newborn health in this area through evidence-based practice and resourceful healthcare approaches. The clinical immersion experience will enrich Xuyan’s ongoing education in every stage of maternity: prenatal, postpartum, and women’s healthcare generally. Xuyan writes, “I don’t want to be the one who only catches babies in the labor room as a final reaper, as I did in China. I want to be the gardener, to walk my patient through the whole pregnancy and not just pregnancy, to protect and watch them grow.”

Xuyan was wonderful. Professional and warm, she took the time to make me feel completely comfortable. I came in quite worried and in need of an ultrasound, she ensured she understood fully and that I got the care I needed. The ultrasound technician was highly knowledgeable and walked me through everything that was happening. Everyone in the office was warms and welcoming. I came here after a bad experience at my gynecologist of 8 years, and I feel like I found a new provider. I highly recommend Xuyan and her team.

I had such a great experience with Xuyan. She’s incredibly sweet, genuinely listens, and makes you feel so comfortable, it’s clear she really loves what she does. I never felt rushed or dismissed, and she takes the time to answer every question with care and patience. The office staff is also amazing—super friendly and probably the coolest team I’ve encountered at a medical office. The only thing I’d mention is that the office can be a little tricky to find the first time, but once you’re there, it’s 100% worth it. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for someone kind, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about their work.

Extremely disappointed that I had an appointment and they took another patient ahead of me that showed up an hour later. There was zero communication and I had to keep asking the doctor. They called me sat me in the room and took another patient. Truly bad service and lack of communication. Such a waste of people’s time. Why do we have an appointment? And if you’re busy and maybe somehow short or doctors why not communicate so that it doesn’t affect a persons life or schedule. I sat inside the office after being called in from the waiting room for another hour. I had to keep going out and asking how much longer.
