Getting to know Zainab Thompson
I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with
9 years of experience in the psychiatric area, including inpatient care for
children and adults, crisis stabilization in the community, and drug abuse
treatment. I earned an associate's degree in nursing from Prince George's Community College and then a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from
Western Governors University. I worked as a psychiatric nurse in an
inpatient hospital and other psychiatric facilities. While pursuing my
PMHNP at Husson University, I worked in psych units, long-term
facilities, and community mental health crisis stabilization and drug
addiction treatment centers.
My primary focus is on treating mood disorders, which includes
depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders, PTSD, ADHD/ODD,
Schizophrenia, Personality disorder, trauma, and psychotic disorders
substance abuse, and chronic mental disease in children and adult clients
aged 6 to adulthood through psychiatric examination, medication
management, and brief psychosocial intervention. I believe in
developing a tailored plan of care that includes patient input,
multidisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based practice.
My strengths as a PMHNP are honesty, respect, and patience. To build
trust with my patient, I must be honest. Respect is crucial; my patients
must feel respected as individuals. This will help to establish a patient-
practitioner relationship, which can benefit the patient's mental health. I also believe that patience is essential for a successful PMHNP.
I have several qualities that make me an effective PMHNP, including
strong communication skills, patience, and compassion. These skills
play an important role in assisting my patients in achieving their healing and can also help me create therapeutic relationships with them.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I am always passionate about helping people and have a strong interest in mental health. I became a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner because I wanted to make a real difference in the lives of individuals who are struggling with mental health problems. I believe in the power of a holistic approach to care, and I am dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to my patients. I have solid communication skills, patience, and compassion for my patients. I make sure to educate my patients about their conditions and treatment options by providing clear, easy-to-understand information. I also make sure to involve my patients in the decision-making process and to answer any questions they may have. I also provide resources such as brochures and websites to help my patients
understand their conditions better.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
A client's first appointment involves a detailed psychiatric evaluation, including mental status exams, diagnostic assessments, and a review of physical health to address the whole person, set treatment goals, and provide education regarding the diagnosis and possible treatment options. Another important part of the process is building trust with the patient. Continue assessments and adjust treatment plans based on patients' responses to treatment.
