What are urgent care centers?

Urgent care centers provide medical attention for sudden injuries and illnesses that require prompt treatment but are not critical enough to necessitate a trip to the emergency room. They typically offer services such as diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care for various emergent conditions.

These centers generally have a team of trained medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and physician assistants. They are typically open for extended hours to accommodate the needs of patients. They also offer quick and convenient walk-in access to medical care. Thus, as the name suggests, an urgent care center is a viable option for someone looking for urgent medical attention.

What are some reasons to visit 24-hour urgent care?

While urgent care centers also have expert doctors and medical staff, they are only suited for certain conditions and can only accommodate specific classes of concerns. Seek urgent care 24 hr near you for the following issues

  • Fever, sore throat, and cough
  • Respiratory illnesses like asthma, bronchitis, etc.
  • Migraines and other headaches
  • Diagnostic tests such as X-rays and laboratory examinations
  • Mild to moderate injuries such as cuts, sprains, and broken bones
  • Moderate back issues
  • Other minor accidents or injuries
  • Skin rashes and other skin conditions
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Irritation and redness of the eyes
  • Stomach issues such as indigestion, nausea, and vomiting

Read on to know why urgent care centers can only see patients for limited issues.

Who works in urgent care centers?

At least one physician is on staff in most urgent care centers. According to the Urgent Care Center Association of America, an estimated 80% of urgent care centers employ a combination of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Other healthcare practitioners include medical assistants; the remaining 20% employ only physicians. Urgent care centers are generally physician-led, with most facilities employing at least one full-time physician. There are many types of practicing physicians. Urgent care centers have family medicine physicians, emergency medicine physicians, and internal medicine physicians.

Here's what some healthcare providers may do at an urgent care clinic:

  • Family medicine physicians see people of all ages, from children to older adults. They guide patients through life and also refer them to specialists.
  • Nurse practitioners: Physicians may not also treat you at your urgent care clinic. You may see an urgent care nurse practitioner when a physician is unavailable. They function independently and can conduct direct patient assessments, monitor a patient's progress, assist with procedural care in a facility, and treat minor issues like infections, abdominal pain, and headaches. They may also initiate IVs, suture minor lacerations, and coordinate care with an emergency room.
  • Internal medicine doctors treat and diagnose various health issues in adults, ranging from infectious diseases to complex chronic health conditions.
  • Medical assistants (MAs): As per the Urgent Care Association's (UCA) 2018 Benchmarking Report, almost 99% of urgent care centers employ medical assistants. MAs perform many roles. However, their scope of practice is determined by the state in which they are practicing. In most states, medical assistants understand a patient's primary complaint and review their medical history before a doctor or nurse conducts a detailed assessment. In some states, medical assistants can administer vaccines, start IVs, and check a patient's vital signs depending on instructions given by a licensed supervising physician and their skill level and training.
  • Sports medicine physicians: You may visit an urgent care center for a sprain or muscle strain. Most urgent care facilities have an X-ray machine, so a physician may take one. In case you have a broken bone, a sports medicine physician or another available doctor may place a cast on the injured area.

What is the difference between emergency rooms and urgent care centers?

Urgent care centers, as listed above, offer care for non-life-threatening illnesses or conditions. On the other hand, emergency rooms provide medical care for health conditions that could be fatal, like chest pain or pressure, pneumonia, uncontrolled bleeding, and seizures. They can also care for compound fractures, head injuries, severe abdominal pain, and headaches.

While many urgent care centers have doctors on staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses can generally be found there. On the other hand, emergency rooms are staffed 24x7 with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses. They also have quick access, if needed, to orthopedics, neurology, and cardiology specialists.

Urgent care centers have limited equipment and can only provide essential imaging services like X-rays. In contrast, emergency rooms have much more sophisticated imaging and laboratory resources to diagnose various conditions.

How should you prepare for a 24-hour urgent care visit?

Preparing for an urgent care visit can be stressful, especially if you need immediate medical attention. However, with some preparation and organization, you can ensure your appointment goes smoothly and efficiently.

Below are some tips on how to prepare if you are seeking urgent care 24 hr near you:

  • Research the location of the nearest urgent care center and make sure it is open and accepting patients.
  • Write down a list of your symptoms and any questions you have for the doctor. It will help you stay focused during the appointment and get all the necessary information.
  • Gather all relevant medical information, including recent test results or X-rays, and bring it to the appointment.
  • Bring your insurance information and any necessary identification, such as a driver's license or passport.
  • Bring a close relative or friend with you to the appointment. They can help keep you calm and offer support during the visit.

Highlights and challenges of 24-hour urgent care

Urgent care centers are advantageous to patients and the US healthcare system, but may also have disadvantages. Being aware of both sides of the coin can help you choose the appropriate healthcare services when required.

Highlights

  • Urgent care centers are walk-in clinics providing outpatient or ambulatory care. Therefore, there is no need to book an appointment before your visit. For this reason, there is hardly any waiting time. Thus, you can receive immediate medical attention for a sudden health issue or acute injury at an urgent care center.
  • Though limited, the laboratory facilities at an urgent care center can speed up the diagnostic process and enable you to receive prompt medical treatment for your health issues.
  • Urgent care centers have flexible working hours. Most centers are open during weekdays and even on weekends. They are open until late evening, unlike your primary care physician. Therefore, if you develop an issue late at night or some reason prevents you from a day visit, you can go to the clinic in the late evening or even after dinner.
  • The treatment charges at urgent care clinics are reasonable compared to costly emergency care. The cost can sometimes be lower than at your family physician's clinic.

Challenges

  • Urgent care centers do not always have a primary care doctor available on staff, and other practitioners, like nurses, may be there to provide medical attention to patients. Thus, in cases where you require expert or specialized care, there may be better choices than an urgent care center.
  • As explained above, urgent care centers do not provide life-saving care. Unlike an emergency room, they are not designed to treat extreme life- or limb-threatening situations.
  • All urgent care centers may not accept your insurance. Though they partner with insurance companies, most centers may have different affiliations. Therefore, urgent care may not be covered by insurance.

Things to know to make the most of urgent care visits

Urgent care centers provide convenient solutions for minor health concerns or routine medical services such as lab work and vaccinations. Often called immediate care centers, they are accessible and beneficial, especially when your primary care doctor is unavailable. However, they are not a substitute for emergency services and cannot handle life-threatening conditions.

1. Check-in options

Most 24-hour urgent care centers near you accept walk-ins, so wait times may vary. To reduce your wait, check if the center offers online check-in. This feature allows you to complete initial paperwork and reserve a spot in line before arriving.

2. Choose the right clinic

If insured, choose a center that accepts your insurance and is in-network to minimize costs. Some clinics specialize in areas like pediatrics or orthopedics. Finding a nearby clinic that matches your needs can make your visit more efficient.

3. Bring essential documents

Because urgent care clinics don’t have your complete medical history, bring your insurance details, a list of current medications, key medical diagnoses, and vaccination records. Also, carry a photo ID and be ready to pay any copays. Bring a parental authorization form if you’re accompanying a minor who isn’t your child.

4. Timing your visit

Although you can visit during regular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays are typically busier. If your condition isn’t urgent, consider calling ahead to ask about current wait times.

5. Know who might treat you

While some urgent care centers have doctors, others may have physician assistants or nurse practitioners. These professionals can assess, treat, and prescribe medications, often recommending follow-up with your regular physician.

6. Recognize when to go to the ER

Urgent care is ideal for conditions like the flu, minor burns, sprains, or UTIs. However, go directly to the ER for severe conditions such as chest pain with difficulty breathing, allergic reactions, or a stroke.

Understanding how a 24-hour urgent care near you works helps ensure quicker, more efficient treatment and avoids unnecessary delays in critical situations.

Find the best urgent care 24 hr near you

Have you suddenly developed a splitting headache? Are you experiencing diarrhea and feeling dehydrated? Do you need assistance with your child's laceration? You may have to visit an urgent care center. To find the best ones in your vicinity, you can rely on Zocdoc.

Zocdoc encourages you to make an informed decision for your healthcare needs. To search for a specialist, you must enter the symptoms or specialty, location, insurance carrier, and plan after you create an account. A comprehensive list of doctors matching your criteria will appear. To narrow down these results, you can employ advanced filters to sort healthcare providers based on gender, hospital affiliations, languages they speak, and whether or not they treat children.

You can also use Zocdoc's built-in insurance detector to find your insurance carrier and plan and select an in-network provider. You may upload a photo of your insurance card if you cannot see your specific insurance plan on Zocdoc. Zocdoc will then scan the image of your insurance card and display a plan that matches your card. Note that this option is only available for medical insurance cards. Dental and Vision are excluded. If you need help uploading your insurance card, contact Zocdoc's service team, which is available 365 days a year via email or chat. For more insurance-related information, go through Zocdoc's patient help center

Zocdoc has a unique profile for every specialist. It includes a brief introduction, details of their educational qualifications, specializations, location, board certification, and more. Zocdoc also has a closed-loop review policy, with verified and accurate patient feedback, that you can rely on before making a final pick. After browsing, you can choose between real-time video and in-person visits to enhance your convenience.

All Zocdoc bookings are simple, secure, and free.

Statistics on urgent care centers

A report published on Upfront Healthcare stated that the country had approximately 11,150 urgent care centers. These centers handle nearly 89 million patient visits annually, accounting for around 30% of all primary care visits.

As per the Urgent Care Association's 2018 Benchmarking Report, more than 70% of all patients at an urgent care center have to wait for less than 20 minutes, and about 94% have to wait less than 30 minutes before seeing a healthcare provider. Nearly 85% of the time, most patients are in and out of a center in less than an hour. Out of all the patients that an urgent care center gets, almost 98% have come to the right place, and only about 2% need to be diverted to an emergency room.
