Laser dermatology

Laser technology is primarily used by cosmetic dermatologists to treat a variety of skin concerns such as redness, large pores, brown spots, uneven skin textures, removal of facial hair, or tattoos and wrinkles. In addition to addressing cosmetic concerns, dermatologists also may use lasers to treat acne, rosacea, warts or nail fungus. If you’re experiencing any of these skin concerns, you should visit your dermatologist for guidance. The type of laser treatment recommended for you will depend on your skin concern and skin type.

Types of laser treatment

Lasers are used to focus high-intensity light into small spots. The light develops within an optical cavity where a medium reside, which could be liquid, gas or solid. Several kinds of lasers are used in skin laser surgery. Three common laser types include continuous wave (CW) laser, the modern quasi-CW laser and the pulsed laser systems. While CW lasers emit a constant beam of light with long durations of exposure, the quasi-CW laser produces interrupted short segments of constant laser energy. The pulsed laser produces a high intensity of energy in a very short period.

Safety measures used for laser treatments

The safety precautions depend on the type of laser and the setting in which the laser is used, but . the clinic staff and patients will be provided with eye protection. Generally, outside the procedure room a warning notice is placed detailing the safety precautions. Avoiding flammable substances and using nonreflective instruments is recommended. Not following the safety procedures can lead to adverse effects: Laser treatments are basically burns, which can lead to pain, redness, crusting, blistering and bruising. It can reactivate herpes simplex and can cause pigment changes and scarring, which might be permanent.
