Scabies

Scabies is a skin condition caused by a mite known as “Sarcoptes scabiei.” The scabies mite burrows into the uppermost layer of the skin where it can lay eggs and live for several months if left untreated. A host immune response generated by your body can cause intense itching and visible rashes. According to the World Health Organization, scabies is one of the most common dermatological conditions and affects more than 200 million people across the globe. It affects people across all ages, races and socioeconomic levels. Usually it is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact; however, it can spread through infested items such as bedding, clothing and towels, as well.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, if a person has had scabies before, the itching begins within one to four days after the exposure. If a person has never had scabies before, it can take as long as two to six weeks for the symptoms to develop. While scabies can develop anywhere on the body, it commonly affects sites such as wrists, elbows, armpits, the waist, buttocks, and between the fingers, among other places, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Here are some of the symptoms of scabies:

  • Intense itching that seems to get worse at night.
  • Rashes and bumps that form a line.
  • Crusts on the skin, indicative of a severe type of scabies known as crusted or Norwegian scabies.
  • Sores.

How is scabies diagnosed? Can it be treated?

In many cases, a dermatologist can diagnose scabies by examining a person’s skin from head to toe. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor may perform a skin biopsy and examine it under a microscope. If they spot mites or their eggs, they will choose an appropriate treatment plan for you.

Yes, scabies can be treated. Scabies should be treated with topical creams that effectively kill mites. Before the treatment begins, you’ll need to decontaminate items such as bedding, clothing and towels. The topical creams are only available with a doctor’s prescription. The cream should be applied all over the body from the neck down and should be washed off after the recommended time. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and use the medication with caution.

Who should undergo scabies treatment?

Any person who is diagnosed with scabies, along with his or her sexual partners and anybody who may have had prolonged skin-to-skin contact with the infested person, should be treated. Treatment may also be recommended for members of a family living in the same house as an infected person.

How can I remove mites from infested items?

According to the CDC, scabies mites can’t survive more than two to three days away from human skin. Infested items should be decontaminated by washing them in hot water, drying them using the hot cycle or by dry cleaning. Items that can’t be washed or dry cleaned should be sealed away for at least 72 hours.

What are some tips for managing scabies?

  • If you think you have scabies, seek medical help immediately.
  • If there is someone you’ve had skin-to-skin contact with, let them know so that they can seek treatment, as well.
  • While applying the medication, be sure to apply it from your neck to your toes, and follow the doctor’s instructions.
  • Generally, it is recommended that you vacuum your entire home on the day that you start treatment.

How much does a visit for scabies treatment cost?

The cost of scabies treatment can vary depending on certain factors, including insurance coverage, choice of provider, status as a new or existing patient and your location.
