Endocrinology Consultation

Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine glands — the glands that produce and secrete hormones that help regulate bodily functions. The thyroid, pancreas, adrenal and pituitary glands are endocrine glands. An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases related to the endocrine glands.  When a gland produces a hormone at unusual amounts — whether more or less than usual — it can lead to medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, cancer and infertility. Out of these, diabetes is the most common endocrine disease. The treatment plan for these diseases would typically target restoring the hormonal balance in your system.

Generally, a patient is referred to an endocrinologist by their family doctor when the provider spots a potential problem after running tests. However, if you’re having a hard time managing your diabetes, or if you have been diagnosed with conditions like metabolic diseases, infertility, hormonal imbalances, osteoporosis or a thyroid disorder, it is best-advised to go in for an endocrinology consultation.

Common questions and answers about endocrinology consultations

Why should I visit an endocrinologist?

  • Endocrinologists are trained specialists who know the best approaches to treating hormonal conditions. During their training, they gain in-depth knowledge of hormones and hormonal diseases.
  • Endocrinologists keep track of the latest and most innovative treatment techniques.

Read “The Value of an Endocrinology” by the Endocrine Society to learn more about the benefits of visiting an endocrinologist.

When should I see an endocrinologist for diabetes?

While a general physician can help you manage the symptoms of diabetes, they may refer you to an endocrinologist when there are complications brought on by diabetes or the treatment isn’t working and the condition has gotten tough to manage.

What are some of the conditions that endocrinologists help manage or treat?

Some of the common conditions treated by endocrinologists include:

What training does an endocrinologist have?

An endocrinologist must successfully complete four years of medical school before being accepted into a residency program. This postgraduate training (residency) can last from three to four years. Upon completing that, the individual can go on to get licensed from their respective state.

When are some tips for my endocrinology consultation?

  • Write down any questions and concerns beforehand, so you don’t forget them.
  • Make sure that you tell your doctor about the severity of your symptoms and when they started.
  • Discuss any medications you may be on and your lifestyle habits.
  • Feel free to discuss your treatment options.
  • Make sure your doctor is covered by your insurance provider.

How much does an endocrinology consultation cost?

The consultation and treatment costs might vary based on your condition, location and insurance provider.
