Deciding whether or not to go to therapy can be an anxiety-inducing experience. One of the reasons I became a therapist was to show people that it’s okay to take that initial step and ask for help. It’s okay to feel stuck and at a loss of where to go next. Whether you are dealing with a career transition or job loss, anxiety over the future, or past trauma resurfacing- it can all feel like an isolating experience. However, it doesn’t have to be.
Many of you reading this may have thought at some point that hiding your feelings is better than revealing them. That it’s better to put a wall up than be vulnerable. I’m here to show you that is no way to handle emotions and feelings. There is real courage that comes out when you allow yourself to open up, and learn healthy ways to work through the day-to-day stressors or unexpected moments life throws at you. The warm and nonjudgmental environment of therapy can help you build that courage.
I have previously worked in an inpatient treatment setting with trauma survivors and clients who had substance abuse disorders. Before making the career change to therapy, I was a teacher both in the public school system as well as in a psychiatric hospital setting. Through both of these experiences, I have worked with people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds. Both my clients and my own personal journey have taught me that having even just one person who really listens to you, can make all of the difference.
