I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor, who has been working at Rikers Island for over 11 years, counseling both adolescent and adult inmates who have allegedly committed the most serious crimes both in and out of jail. Despite dealing with this most difficult population, I have been recognized as one of the most beloved and popular counselors at Rikers. My compassion, empathy, sincerity, tolerance, non-judgmental open-mindedness, and great listening skills have served me well in developing a great rapport and trust among many of the inmates. As the result of my years at Rikers, I have become very experienced dealing with individuals suffering from depression, suicide ideation, anxiety, panic disorders, PTSD, OCD, substance abuse and other addictive behaviors, in addition to anger management, impulsive/maladaptive behaviors, and various personality disorders. I believe that my experience at Rikers has provided me a very unique advantage, particularly counseling "teenagers and young adults at risk". I can relate to them, first hand, the potential consequences of their actions, giving them the scoop of what jail is really like, and helping them avoid and overcome their current "at risk" behaviors.
