More about Dr. Letha B Cole, MD

My approach to treating patients in psychological distress is a wholistic one. I work with patients and families to identify factors including physical, life style, nutritional, behavioral, and interpersonal, that may be contributing to psychological distress. We will create a safe relationship for exploring concerns, developing an understanding of the nature of the problem and how it came about and developing new ways of thinking and behaving that will contribute to a more fulfilling life experience for each person. When I treat patients with medications, I prefer to also be the person doing psychotherapy with them. This allows me to be aware of the always present interplay between symptoms and potential medication side effects. The likelihood that we will get optimal results from the use of psychotropic medications is then increased and the risks of use are minimized. Recently, I have begun to explore in more depth, the physical factors that may cause certain patients to suffer from treatment resistant depression and anxiety symptoms. This involves doing certain laboratory tests of adrenal and hormonal function and correcting underlying imbalances when they are present. When I treat children under 12 years of age, I prefer to meet first with parents so that they can get an impression of the way I work, and so make an informed decision about whether they feel I will be a good provider for their child and can meet the family's needs. Whenever I am working with a child or adolescent under age 18, I will meet with parents periodically to review my treatment recommendations and the progress of treatment from their points of view as well as mine and the patient's. If it is desirable, I also help parents develop their parenting skills to best meet the needs of a particular child.
