My name is Marika Courtney and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of Ohio. I work with both individuals and couples ages 18 and over. I work with people who are struggling with transitions in their lives, such as career changes, relationship changes, parenting, aging, and anything else that feels scary and exciting all at the same time. I am a Christian and invite faith into sessions when the clients express their desire.
My approach
I am not a counselor that just asks, "How does that make you feel?" I am a counselor that will be able to challenge you to put more action into your life because that is where the real work begins and initiates the change you know you need. We will work on your thoughts and behaviors together to figure out what keeps you stuck and resistant to living the life you envision for yourself. If you are ready to take accountability and responsibility for your life, I can help you make that leap.
My focus
I work well with people who are ready for change now and choose to stop blaming others for anything hard or wrong in their lives. I do not work well with people who want a counselor to sit in pity with them. If you want to stop just existing and start living, I may be a good fit. I am solution-focused, so you name the problem, and then we work together to come up with the actions you need to initiate and put into place to move you where you want to go next in this journey. I work with individuals struggling with trauma, in recovery with addiction, anxiety, depression, and all life transitions. I also work with couples who are looking to save their relationship.
My communication style
To work with me will make you feel empowered. You will not feel judged or less than when you are in your session. I am a mother of two tween daughters and have been married for over a decade. I understand life is really hard most of the time. I am able to connect with you on a human level, not just a client level.
