Hi there, I'm Michael!
My name is Michael Allen. I am a licensed independent clinical social worker with a Master’s in Social Work from Simmons University. I offer a warm, non-judgmental opportunity to reflect on what is going on for you and what you can do about it. I would welcome the chance to help you consider what to do with your one precious life.
My approach
As I get to know clients, I draw from a therapies based on what makes sense for you. One size does not fit all! Some of the biggest theoretical influences on my thinking include: person-in-environment (our social and material environments matter—a great deal—it’s not all in our heads!), strengths-based work (strengths are what we build on and we all have many), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Internal Family Systems, DBT, and Existential Therapy.
My focus
I work with all clients adolescent and older. I am a good fit for anyone curious about themselves and the world in which they live. Some challenges I work with most often include life transitions, loss, relationship issues, economic pressure, identity, depression, anxiety, trauma, existential fears, and political concerns.
My communication style
I am warm, casual, collaborative, not overly structured, and calm. My work with clients tends to be conversational.
My journey to mental healthcare
I worked in macro settings for years before realizing that what I love most is talking with people about their lives.
My goals for you
I encourage clients to set their own goals for their life and our work together. My input can support these goals or, sometimes, help make goals realistic.
My first session with you
It’s a get-to-know-you meeting. I encourage clients to share about themselves in terms of life right now, as well as a bit about their personal history. I also talk with clients about their hopes, concerns, and expectations for our work together, and whether they feel we might be a good fit.
