Robert earned his master’s degree in Social Work in 1984 from New York University. Since that time, he has worked in a number of mental health-related facilities, including Child Guidance Clinics, Outpatient Mental Health Clinics, On-Site School-Based Programs, and Rikers Island Prison. He has also served as a clinic director for several outpatient mental health programs. For over 17 years, he has worked at a clinic in the Rockaways, primarily with gang members from the community and those returning from incarceration. By working with multiple diverse communities, Robert was able to advance his training in bereavement counseling and trauma. He has experience working with all age groups, from children as young as six through the elderly years. He enjoys play therapy with children, particularly while utilizing hand puppets. He also feels comfortable with couples counseling as well as bereavement counseling. Robert has spent a great deal of time with young adults transitioning from family life to greater independence. He is skilled in working with the teenage population, especially males. His therapeutic style in working with adults and young adults comes primarily from a Family Systems perspective combined with a Psychodynamic Perspective. This style of therapy is introspective in nature and primarily involves the use of reflective listening combined with motivational interviewing. At times, he may also incorporate certain aspects of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) or DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) with clients. His goal in treating clients is to help them find the strengths within themselves to overcome their stumbling blocks and hurdles and return to their life path with newfound freedom for a rewarding future.
