My experience with Shelby has been really positive. After my previous experience with EMDR I wanted to find a therapist who is really focused on conducting a proper EMDR session, and they didn’t disappoint. I also wanted someone who understands differences, whether religious, cultural, etc., because in the past it was always difficult to find a therapist who will embody all understanding. If something doesn’t go according to plan, or I seem to have different emotions than expected, they take the time to bring me back to the beginning stage of the session where I would feel positive and focused again. I also like the reassurance that they care how the course of my therapy continues by discussing some of my unexpected reactions with their weekly consulting group. Overall, I have had a great experience and I highly recommend them.

I’ve been seeing Shelby for a little over 3 years. They are truly fantastic. They find a phenomenal balance between listening, holding space for my feelings, affirming me and offering another perspective, as well as challenging thought processes that don’t serve me. They are an extremely humble, wise, and proactive human being that has been there for me through lots of up and downs. I truly don’t know where I would be without them. It also is really affirming and just awesome to have a queer and gender queer therapist who just GETS IT. But no matter how you identify, if you’re looking for an understanding, thoughtful and simply kick @ss therapist, please schedule a consultation with them. You’ll be so glad you did.

More about Shelby Tesoriero-Capone, LCAT

Please be aware that I charge $50 for a consultation. Hi there! I'm Shelby (they/them), and as someone who identifies within the LGBTQ+ community, I'm unfortunately aware of how challenging it is to find providers who understand our experience as a sexual and gender minority (SGM). Although everyone's experience is different, I understand what you are going through, how you're feeling, and some thoughts that have crossed your mind. Together we'll problem solve, explore thought patterns, and you'll receive support. I initially wanted to become a graphic designer but quickly realized it was not a good fit. However, going into the Art Therapy field wasn't a far stretch. Growing up, I enjoyed art and was always the ?therapist' in my friend group. I earned my Bachelor's degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College, my Master's in Creative Arts Therapy from Hofstra University, and a Post-Graduate Certificate in LGBT Relevancy from Adelphi University. While in college and learning about art therapy techniques and approaches with specific populations, I noticed a lack of representation for LGBTQ+ folks. At that time, I also came out as gay, so I was extremely passionate about exploring inclusive care for my newfound community. Most LGBTQ+ identifying folks have a horror story when it comes to healthcare. I want to actively challenge that and create a safe space for the community I identify with and am a part of. I would like to think that I make therapy approachable and personable; I have piercings, tattoos, and wear casual clothing while using sarcasm and humor during sessions. When I'm not seeing clients, you can find me on the couch watching HGTV (my spouse jokes by saying I'm the third Property Brother) or in my backyard spending time with my dogs. I really value my family, so I spend a lot of time with them. One day, I want to open my own Pride center for LGBTQ+ youth and allies to gather.

Shelby is by far the best therapist I have ever been so lucky to have been treated under. They are healing and professional but have a sense of humor about them and meet you where you are, truly making it individualized, personalized, and humanized care. I cannot recommend them enough. My mental health has improved leaps and bounds under their care and Shelby has a huge part to play in that. I hope everyone finds as much success under Shelby as I have.
After experiences with previous therapists not understanding my (them) 14 year old who identifies as non-binary, finding Shelby was a huge relief. My child felt safe talking to Shelby without the need to explain themself or their identity. They have stayed with Shelby for well over a year and have found great comfort in Shelby’s guidance.
