Who are psychiatrists?

Psychiatrists are certified medical doctors specializing in preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses and emotional problems. They are trained in the physical and psychological aspects of mental health and develop comprehensive treatment plans for their patients.

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), a psychiatrist is a medical professional who has completed four years of medical education and four years of psychiatric residency training. During their training, they learn about the complex interplay between the brain, behavior, and environment and how this impacts mental health.

In addition to these qualifications, the National Licensing Board requires psychiatrists to pass a licensure examination and obtain a license from the state where they practice. They may also pursue additional certification in a particular care area, such as child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, or geriatric psychiatry.

What do psychiatrists do?

Here are some of the primary responsibilities of a psychiatrist:

  • Diagnosis and treatment: Psychiatrists diagnose mental illnesses and emotional disorders through observation, interviews, and tests. They prescribe medication and psychotherapy to treat mental health conditions. They monitor the progress of their patients and adjust treatment plans as necessary.

  • Collaboration with other healthcare providers: Psychiatrists routinely work with other healthcare professionals, and this helps in providing comprehensive care to their patients. They consult with primary care physicians, social workers, and other mental health specialists to coordinate care and provide referrals.

  • Research and education: Psychiatrists participate in research to advance the field of psychiatry and improve treatments for mental illnesses. They teach medical students, residents, and other healthcare providers about mental health conditions and medicines.

  • Advocacy: Psychiatrists advocate for the rights of people with mental illnesses and promote public awareness of mental health issues. They work to improve access to various mental health services and reduce the stigma linked to mental illnesses.

What treatment techniques can psychiatrists undertake?

Psychiatrists use various treatments to help individuals with mental health conditions. These include medication, therapy, and other interventions. Here are some common ones that psychiatrists near you may use:

  • Medication: Healthcare providers often use psychiatric drugs to treat mental health conditions. They can help regulate brain chemistry and improve symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis. Medications for psychiatric disorders include antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and anxiolytics.

  • Psychotherapy: Talking with a mental health professional about emotional and behavioral concerns is what psychotherapy involves. Different types of psychotherapy can be used depending on the individual's needs and the type of mental health condition they have. Common types of psychotherapy include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic therapy.

  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): ECT is a treatment that utilizes electrical currents to stimulate the brain. Typically, mental health professionals use it for individuals who experience severe depression or other mental health conditions that have not responded positively to other treatments.

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS): Transcranial magnetic stimulation helps stimulate nerve cells in the brain with magnetic fields. It involves placing a magnetic coil against the scalp and delivering brief pulses to the brain.

  • Hospitalization: In some cases, individuals with severe mental health conditions may need to be hospitalized for safety or to receive intensive treatment. Psychiatric hospitalization can help provide a safe environment for such individuals. During hospitalization, individuals may receive medication, psychotherapy, and other treatments to help stabilize their condition.

Top reasons to visit a psychiatrist

Mental health problems can often lead to multiple physical health complications. Therefore, you must never ignore them. Some people may feel apprehensive about visiting a psychiatrist. However, such a visit is crucial for your overall health and well-being. The top reasons to see a psychiatrist near you include the following:

  • Feeling lonely: The feeling of loneliness is the most challenging mental health issue to deal with for a person. Such feelings exaggerate or worsen the existing problems or struggles of the person. Such people require a robust support system at home or with family to help cope with their loneliness. The psychiatrist can provide proper mental therapy and offer a support structure to comfort them by validating and acknowledging their feelings and guiding them toward holistic mental healing.

  • Showing signs of a severe mental health issue: Psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia need immediate attention and treatment. A person with bipolar disorder violently shifts between manic behavior and depressive episodes. Similarly, schizophrenia causes psychosis, wherein a person experiences hallucinations and delusions.

These conditions need immediate treatment to manage the symptoms and heal effectively. If ignored, these symptoms can severely degrade the person's overall mental health, and they may even turn to substance abuse or drugs to manage their symptoms.

Psychiatrists conduct therapies and prescribe medications to manage such illness and their symptoms effectively. It enables the individual to lead a good quality of life.

  • Difficulty coping with day-to-day problems: Day-to-day problems can add to your life's stress and anxiety build-up. As a result, you may find it very difficult to control your emotional and behavioral reactions and don't know how to cope with such issues. Therapy sessions with the psychiatrist can help you understand your mental illness and its symptoms. You'll learn to control your emotions and behaviors, enabling you to cope better with your day-to-day problems.

  • Become withdrawn: If a person resists doing the activities they usually enjoy or no longer finds pleasure and happiness, it's a serious sign of a mental health issue. Depression is the most common cause of such withdrawal behaviors in a person. Psychiatrists use appropriate therapy to uncover the underlying causes of such feelings. They can create a treatment plan to tackle the problem and its symptoms effectively.

How are psychologists and psychiatrists different?

Psychologists and psychiatrists are mental health experts who aid people suffering from mental illnesses, but there are some notable distinctions between them.

Psychologists typically possess a doctoral degree in psychology and are trained in psychotherapy, psychological testing, and research methods. They focus on understanding how people think, feel, and behave and use this understanding to help individuals with depression, anxiety, trauma, or other concerns.

On the other hand, psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. They have a medical degree and other typical qualifications described above. While psychologists and psychiatrists work in the same field, they have different training, expertise, and approaches to treatment. It is essential for individuals seeking mental health services to understand these distinctions and choose a provider who can best meet their needs.

Mental Health in California

According to a report published by the California Health Care Foundation in 2022, mental illness is one of Californians' most common health problems. Nearly 1 in 7 adults in the state had a mental illness, and about 26 had a severe mental illness that makes daily activities difficult. Approximately 1 in 14 children had an emotional disorder that limited their family, school, or community activities.

The study also concluded that the prevalence of major mental illnesses varied by income, with households below 100% of the federal poverty line having much higher rates of such diseases in children and adults. California's suicide rate was found below both the national suicide rate and the Healthy People 2030 target, although suicide rates within the state varied by gender, race/ethnicity, and county. Nearly two-thirds of adults with mental illness and two-thirds of adolescents with major depressive episodes were untreated.
