Dr. Derek Wong is proud to be a dentist but is even prouder to be a native San Mateo resident serving his community! Born and raised in San Francisco, Dr. Wong moved to San Carlos/San Mateo and attended elementary school through high school where he graduated from Junipero Serra High, Home of the Padres! Knowing full well that he wanted to be a dentist (even in high school), Dr. Wong then attended New York University where he graduated with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) in 2010. He then participated in a dental residency program at the Albert Einstein/Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York. There, Dr. Wong was able to provide treatment to the under served communities of the Bronx while honing his dental skills and treating unique and difficult cases.
After his tenure in New York, Dr. Wong returned to his home state of California. There, he practiced for 6 years working under the tutelage of other mentor doctors in Oakland and San Rafael before settling in his hometown of San Mateo and opening his own practice.
When he's not taking care of patients, Dr. Wong loves to enjoy his music. From his vintage record collection to taking in a concert or 10, Dr. Wong listens to all genres of music. From blues, to jazz, to classic rock, to classical, opera, you name it, he's heard it. Dr. Wong also loves his local sports. He was raised a Giants, Niners, and Warriors fan but also roots for all the Bay Area teams (Raiders, A's, Sharks). An avid “foodie,” Dr. Wong loves to try out interesting new cuisines ranging from fine dining to the newest hole in the wall. If you've got recommendations, let him know!

I am not a great patient at the dentist and am riddled with fear. I have some work to be done and Dr. Wong was very thorough in explaining all my options. He was not judgmental and did not shame me, but rather approached it as if we are entering into a partnership.

Dr. Wong has been, and still is, my favorite dentist of all time. Dude, is very chill, patient, and really goes out of his way to make sure I’m comfortable. Even if I were to ever leave the area, I would still book a hotel and fly back to San Mateo just to keep him as my dentist. 11/10 would recommend!

Visiting Dr. W’s office was the ideal for new customers looking for a GREAT dentist. The concierge Alexa was friendly, and answered all my questions before my appointment. She was swift at calling me back to discuss what documents were needed to prepare, and luckily, most of these were sent over the phone—their process is really streamlined!
I was seen immediately on 2/14/22—I expressed to Dr. W I had not been to the dentist in over 2 years (in part due to the pandemic).
He started with X-Rays, and finished my appointment with a thorough cleaning. He even talked to me about being a candidate for Invisalign some time down the road. I scheduled my next 2 visits already.
On a safety note- there was ample bottles of hand sanitizer available for their customers. The office was extraordinarily clean, well decorated and above all AMAZING to be in. If you are hesitant about visiting the dentist, Dr. W is your best bet! You won’t be disappointed!

Amazing doctor experience as usual!!! Super patient. My granddaughter was very nervous and he was very kind and super explanatory with her and assured her of every single step and put her all her fears at ease. This was my best experience at a dentists office ever. I have very sensitive gums and teeth, so usually getting my teeth cleaned and having a filling is extremely painful, but not with Dr Wong. He was very gentle, careful and quick; talking me through every sept of the process. I am so grateful to Dr Wong and honestly believe he was put on this planet to do what he does. Five Stars!!
