I am a Columbia trained Board Certified psychiatrist and graduated from the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. I am especially interested in the interface between mood disorders and inner conflicts. Many patients have been treated with antidepressants alone or psychotherapy alone even though they had mild mood excursions towards depression and activation. A mild mood stabilizer could have made a big difference allowing the patient during psychotherapy access to creative resources otherwise foreclosed . What should have alerted the therapist (something usually not emphasized in textbooks) is an overall functioning far below the patient's potential for career or love life.
