Although the wait was long, the time with Dr. El-Shafei was worth it. He did not rush the visit and genuinely expressed interest in what I shared.

What I liked: Dr. Ashraf was very kind and charismatic. It felt like he was really listening to me and he diagnosed what was going on with me! While I could have been given prescriptions for two medications and start themat the same time, the doctor advised to start with just one and to see how things work first, which I appreciate. He also answered all my questions and apprehensions about the medication. What could improve: - The wait was 1 hour and 40 minutes, however, which seems to be faster than the other reviews here, but still a long wait. My appointment was for 7:30 pm and I saw the doctor around 9:10. The visit itself was about 10-15 minutes, so the wait is too long for the actual visit. I wish the visit was a bit longer, but I think my diagnosis was pretty clear cut, so there was no need to extend it. - It also felt like Dr. Ashraf was quick to recommend medication. - The front desk, while polite (if you treat them with respect and politeness, they will do the same), was a bit slow to do things. For example, I needed a letter of diagnosis from the doctor, but this took about 20 minutes for them to print and give to me. Their slowness is understandable because there are too many patients booked, so there’s not enough staff to deal with the volume of patients. - DEFINITELY overbooked. There’s so many people trying to see Dr. Ashraf, which translates to long waiting times and a (understandably) slow front desk. Some patients might go over the allotted time for their appointment (30 minutes, I think) because it seems like the doctor totally hears them out and tries to best to help them if they need the time. While this is really great for the patient, it exacerbates the waiting times even more. Having worked in a clinic before with similar overbooking issues, I’m not sure who is allowing this to happen, but I wouldn’t blame the front desk. They are most likely following management orders to book as many people as possible to maximize revenue. Overall: If you can get over the long wait times, I feel it is definitely worth a shot with Dr. Ashraf, who has great bedside manner and wants to hear you out. If I have the time, I will definitely go back.

I was warmly greeted by the front staff upon my arrival. I was an hour early so I waited a bit but they did their best to accommodate me. The physician came up with a game plan for me right awayand he was very thorough when explaining things to me. I’ve personally had a great experience. Don’t let the other reviews sway you.

He works with me. Very caring. Although he’s out of my network I still come back to him because he works with me and doesn’t pressure me as I’ve had by past psychiatrists in the past. I don’t know what moreto say. I just am very appreciative and lucky to have him as a psychiatrist. The only upside if the amount of patients he has which is a very long wait. The Doctor and his staff are Muslim so when their Ramadan (I think that’s how you spell it) ??????? goes into effect for them the wait is longer because that’s when they are able to feast. The wait to be seen is longer. I love that his office hours are after 5pm so all in all is ok, for me it works.

The front desk and the doctor were great, no complaints. The wait, however, was over two hours from the scheduled appointment time. Sure, a comfy armchair is nice while you wait, but when there's a room full of 20 people noteveryone gets a chair. The wait was so long that I counted 4 people sleeping. I do recommend, but only if you have the time (and sleeping bag).

Dr. Ashraf is kind, considerate, and very knowledgeable. He gives you all the facts in a calm, patient, and comfortable manner. He also offers noteworthy advice about how to manage medications. Furthermore, his office is extremely charming. My only small issue was with the extended wait time to be seen. But that’s only because he cares about his patients and doesn’t rush you. Overall my experience was very good—efficient and effective.

Wait times atrocious. Front desk has improved a little bit but it's pretty apparent they aren't concerned enough about their customers time. Still a good doctor with a staff who are probably really good people off-the-job. Just very unprofessionalfront office. It seems like the only things they do in a timely fashion is the bare minimum or money related. :(

As many of the other reviews have stated, the wait times in this office are atrocious. However, once you get through to seeing the doctor, I believe he was extremely friendly and helpful. I had been with another psychiatrist for 5years before having to move to NYC, and was nervous about the process. After sitting with Dr. Elshafei and going over everything I felt very relaxed and was able to stay on track with my medications. However, if you really don't have the 2-3 hours to spare for a visit, it may not be for you.

The wait is worth it. It's clear there are not a lot of good doctor's in Sunset Park or Bay Ridge. Do not turn away or get frustrated if your wait is long. That is insignificant frankly relative to the diagnoseshe is able to provide and subsequent plan. Therefore, I highly recommend him.

Meetings were short and the wait time was long in this overcrowded, anxiety-producing, dimly-lit basement. Once I finally got in to see Dr. Elshafei, he was kind but I didn't feel a connection. Meetings were short. I ended up having potentiallyconcerning side effects from one of my medications, and tried contacting his office via email and phone for two weeks. I never got a response and couldn't even schedule a new appointment because they weren't picking up the phone.

Expect to wait at least one hour to be seen. Every time I have been to this office, I've had to wait that long, and it seems the other patients do too. The MD is good, but having to wait upto two hours for a five minute appointment is too long!

I’ve been coming to doctor Elshafei for almost two years. Writing an honest review of him and his office is quite difficult because, like many others have said, he’s a great physician. I suspect that because he is such a compassionateand empathetic doctor, he’s overburdened himself and his staff. The amount of patients booked in a single evening is absolutely ridiculous. Most of the time, it’s standing room only. The waiting room and bathrooms (at both offices) are filthy and bizarrely decorated. Every time I’ve had an appointment with him, I’ve had to mentally prepare myself for the 2+ hour uncomfortable wait. But again, he’s an incredible doctor and he’s personally gone out of his way to help me through highly stressful situations. All of that being said, this is NYC and there are hundreds of adept physicians. There’s no need to suffer through horrendous wait times and incompetent receptionists. My last appointment with Elshafei was last night, as I’ve found a new physician in Manhattan, much closer to my house. It’s taken me so long to leave because I do feel a certain loyalty toward Elshafei. Would I recommend Dr. Elshafei to someone? Yes, but only outside of the context of his practice as it currently is. I don’t know if it’s always been this way or always will be, but as it is, I say do not make an appointment.
