She was extremely kind and knowledgable. I usually don't like women gynocologists but she is my new favorite doctor in general. Took her time, was non judgemental and answered and waited for every question I had. Amazing experience.

Barbi Phelps-Sandall, MD, grew up in the Cleveland suburbs. Visits with loving grandparents and time spent with cousins and good friends are special memories. Traveling through the United States and Europe with Up With People was the teenage highlight. Ohio State was the site of undergraduate work, earning degrees in Biology and Dental Hygiene. A Masters in Health Education was earned from the University of Cincinnati while practicing as a dental hygienist and teaching at a community college. The move to California was an exciting change from the Midwest. More graduate studies were done at California State University, Sacramento, and teaching continued at Sacramento City College, and UC San Francisco.
On to medical school at UCLA and then internship and residency in OB/GYN at Santa Clara Kaiser. Thereafter, work in obstetrics and gynecology, in the South Bay Area, has been interesting and rewarding. Enrolling and graduating from the Integrative Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Arizona under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Weil, was inspiring and life-changing. At the same time, training in Robotic Surgery and other minimally invasive techniques has added new challenges and advancement in operative skills. Recent volunteer work includes a week spent in Haiti shortly after the earthquake in 2010, participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk, in September 2011, and taking part in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in July 2012. Memberships include the American Congress of OB/GYN, Palo Alto Alumni Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and P.E.O.. Personal interests: reading (history, biographies, and the classics.) Scuba diving (Hawaii, Caymen Islands, Mexico, and the Galapagos Islands.) Animals (two wonderful yellow labs: Luke and Berkeley, and a cuddly kitty, Kitsy.)

I was thoroughly unimpressed with Dr. Phelps-Sandall. My appointment was late in the day - I was the only patient in the waiting room when I got there (I think a bit after 4pm). For some reason I still waited for more than 30 minutes to be seen. When she did see me, she was friendly enough but her performance as a doctor/medical expert was sub-par. I asked her very basic questions about different contraceptive options - her response was essentially "I can give you some brochures." That's lovely, Dr. Phelps-Sandall, but I can get those online just as easily - why on earth am I wasting my time in your office if you're referring me to another source for general information (in which you are specifically supposed to be an expert)? Even better, she never actually bothered to give me the brochures (a failure that can't be excused based on distractions or a hectic office, as I appeared to be the only patient there).
The front desk staff, however, was not only friendly but actually helpful. I would be quite happy to deal with them again (in a different doctor's office).
