throughout her practice. Born and raised in India, from a young age Dr Akber worked under the guidance of her mother who owned a Ob/Gyn private practice. As she grew up, Dr. Akber learned about the values of honesty, discipline and a strong work ethic. She maintained these principles throughout medical school at Gandhi Medical College where she started in 1990 then graduated in the top 5% of her class. In 1998, Dr. Akber moved to the United States where she later began her Psychiatry Residency Program in year 2000 at NUMC (Nassau University Medical Center) in Long Island, New York. This Residency included four rigorous years of extensive training in diagnosis and management of severe psychiatric illnesses. It was during her Residency where she continued her comprehensive approach to treating patients incorporating it into field of Psychiatry. This therapeutic approach encompasses all factors to an individual’s well- being. Dr. Akber believes that physical, emotional and spiritual factors contribute to an individual’s mental health. In order to properly treat a patient, medication cannot be the single most factor, but an aspect in the pursuit of well-being. Dr. Akber also believes that a collaborative approach through working with multidisciplinary treatments can be very successful. She has received numerous accolades for her holistic approach. Her specialties include, but are not limited to: Depression, Anxiety disorders, Eating disorders, Weight Management Issues, Women’s Issues, Cultural Issues, Adult ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Abuse, and Suicidal & Personality disorders.
