Dr. Catherine Chen is a board certified dermatologist with over 10 years of experience in the East Valley. She joins Spectrum Dermatology with her primary goal of constructing the best skin care and multi-disciplinary team for her patients. Dr. Chen graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Architecture. She remembers when her father passed away during her college years, that he said she would make a good doctor. This inspired her to take pre-med classes at Harvard Extension School while working as an architect. Her journey through doing pathology research at Boston Children's Hospital led her back to University of Texas, Galveston for medical school. She then graduated with one of the school's highest distinctions, the William Osler Award and graduated with the prestigious honor of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
She returned to the northeast for Dermatology residency at Boston University School of Medicine where she was published in many peer-reviewed journals and was selected as Chief Resident in her final year.
Dr. Chen is especially proud that the Arizona Cancer Registry lists her in the top 15% of dermatologists for the number of melanomas she diagnosed in 2013 and 2014, when the Registry began reporting data back to physicians. She and her husband Dr. Thomas Tsai, a family doctor in Gilbert have two sons. They enjoy boating and fishing, and Dr. Chen paints portraits while serving as Kyrene Traditional Academy-Sureno's Art Masterpiece Coordinator and World Fair Chair. She teaches Sunday school and helps with Project Angel Tree, while supporting International Justice Missions.

The Doctor seems very knowledgable, but extremely rushed. I was in and out within 10 minutes from the moment I actually saw the Dr. not including the wait time. She was kind but so worried about getting to the next patient and keeping her numbers up that I left extremely confused on what the overall outcome and instructions for me were. She attempted to leave the room multiple times before I could ask a question and would not let me finish expressing my concern before providing a generalized suggestion. Lastly, I completed the forms on here prior to my app and was still asked to fill out the exact same information so I do not think they pulled it.

I was a little apprehensive walking into the waiting room (the exterior of the building and the waiting room are pretty old and could use some refreshing), but Dr Chen was so warm and kind! She answered all of my questions and even gave pricing right there for a couple cosmetic things I was interested in. I would highly recommend Dr. Chen to anyone!

Dr. Chen-Tsai was amazing, however, her office staff wasn't up to par. They didn't seem to understand how to download documents off of ZocDoc and instead of trying to find a solution they wanted to reschedule for a different day. The office staff seemed completely disorganized. If they don't know how to properly utilize ZocDoc, they shouldn't offer its services to patients.

Dr. Chen-Tsai was engaging, courteous and charming. She went right to work, examining my face and upper torso for anything that looked unusual. She quickly identified a number of moles and other benign skin conditions and set my mind at ease. I told her that she had "made my day, week month and year special by removing any and all fears that I had". She told me I didn't need to come back for a year. She is one special physician! I loved her!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Chen-Tsai was personable, knowledgeable, and took the time to listen to my concerns. The staff was also very good. The office itself is old and outdated, but I understand that this may not be a permanent location. The only drawback was that my wait time was long (about 50 minutes).

I had to wait for almost 45 minutes between the waiting room and the exam room, but Dr. Chen was very apologetic. She's very knowledgeable and personable. I just found out that a friend of mine went to her for years and really liked her, too. I would definitely recommend Dr. Chen!

Good visit, quick and the doctor appeared knowledgeable. Wish that the written instructions I left with were more clear, in addition to having a clear list of what was prescribed.
The office also took a while to call in my prescription. I have left three messages and have not heard back from anyone. (Not sure either of these are in the doctor's control, but thought they were important to point out).
