Dr. Smith is terrific in every way - he explains things clearly, he's thorough in his exams, and he has the latest technology for eye exams. I have a family history of glaucoma, and he's been keeping a close watch on my optic nerves for many years. He has a great bedside manner and never rushes through an exam. I have great trust in him and thoroughly enjoy my visits.

Dr. Duane Smith is a licensed optometrist who has practiced in Cambridge and Boston since 1995. He received dual bachelors' degrees, with honors, in biology from St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY and visual science from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Smith earned his doctorate degree from Illinois College of Optometry.
While a student, he developed an interest in research, earning an academic graduate award for original research. Dr. Smith participated in the original application of cyclosporine as a treatment for dry eye, was a co-investigator in the first study using an intra-ocular device for drug delivery and was the chief investigator of the Eye Watch project identifying when immune suppressed patients were at risk for ocular complications.
Dr. Smith completed two research projects within the last year. One investigated a new preservative-free contact lens disinfection system and the other a high-definition 1 Day disposable contact. Both products were granted FDA approval.
Dr. Smith has volunteered on a number of international trips to provide eye care for patients in developing countries who would otherwise have no access to such care. He is leaving June 3013 for a 3 week trip to the Amazon region of Brazil to participate in another medical mission. In addition, he is committed to meeting the needs of the under-served local community. Dr. Smith is also a volunteer ESOL instructor in the Metro area. And he has offered his time the last two years to the Boston International Film Festival.
Dr. Smith specializes in primary eye care, contact lenses, keratoconus, and the pre/post surgical management of patients.
