Since becoming a psychiatrist I have spent many years working in the communities where I have lived,including several community based clinics and non-profit organizations in Tucson and San Diego, where I have lived since 1998. Most recently I have worked as a consultant in San Diego,providing psychiatric care to people from many socioeconomic backgrounds. I have many years of experience treating very challenging psychiatric disorders including: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, chemical dependence and many others. Over the course of 17 years of experience working in private practice, hospitals, and community based clinics, I have seen my share of people whose lives have been ravaged by mental illness. I feel comfortable in saying that I have seen the full spectrum of mental illness, though one can never say that one has seen it all. I am humbled by both the seriousness of psychiatric disorders and the resilience of those affected by it. I have approached the treatment of mental illness with an open mind, integrating biological and psychodynamic elements into my practice. I have also had the privilege of working with people from varied backgrounds (socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic) by having worked in a wide variety of settings. I have seen that the suffering that comes from psychiatric illness cuts through all barriers. I have come to understand that behind the diagnosis there is a human being who suffers.
