James Patterson, MD treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at both of our Denver and Lakewood offices. Dr. Patterson is a Denver native, and the son of a former Denver urologist. He has two sons, Colin and Cameron.
Dr. Patterson graduated from Cherry Creek High School, and spent one year living in Norway as an American Field Service foreign exchange student. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1976, and then completed medical school at the University of Colorado in 1981. After serving his medical internship year in Christchurch, New Zealand, he returned to the University of Colorado for his residency in ophthalmology.
Since finishing his residency, Dr. Patterson has been in practice with Colorado Ophthalmology Associates, excelling in eye surgeries such as; refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery. Dr. Patterson has been performing refractive surgery since 1987, and started performing PRK and LASIK surgery in 1996, when they were first approved in the United States. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Patterson was one of the founding physicians of the Clear Vision Laser Centers in the Denver metropolitan area. He is also a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and is a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. In the past several years, he has partnered with the Centura Global Health Initiatives to provide cataract surgery to needy patients in the Amazon Basin in Peru.
Outside of his rewarding profession as an eye doctor, Dr. Patterson enjoys skiing, sailing, hiking, and bicycling.

The visit was great. Got all my questions answered and learned what was going on with my eye. I only wish doctor's offices were a bit more sensitive to people's time. It is interesting that one of your time increments in your survey is "less than 30 minutes." Between taking my folks to doctor appointments and my own appointments, I spend hours every month waiting beyond appointment times. I lose work time with each appointment and that makes my time valuable as well. I was a nurse for many years and I know that emergencies and other events can throw off schedules, but I ran an outpatient clinic for years and I know that staying on schedule can be achieved with diligence.

Dr. Patterson is great! Very energetic and pleasant. I just see him for routine visits to do a thorough eye diagnostic, and to update my prescriptions for contacts and glasses, but highly recommend him for these services.

He was quite good. Their was a lot of testing and evaluation before Dr. Patterson came in, so he had most of the necessary information. I cannot comment on the quality of the initial analysis, but hope that Dr. Patterson monitors that quality. Don't know, but watch Restaurants Impossible. It happens in Dr. offices too. Don't know what this one rates, but I liked my experience, and hope that Dr. Patterson expects the best of his employees.

Dr Patterson and his nurse were both great. I had to take my 5-month-old baby in with me and when she got fussy, they were both very pleasant toward her and even let her sit in my lap during the exam. And when it turned out that I didn't even need glasses, Dr Patterson was very honest and didn't just try to make a buck by selling me something I didn't need. Overall, it was an ideal experience.
