I thought Dr Charen is a straight shooter, down to earth, and pleasant and friendly and willing to answer questions. Was relieved to hear that I am not a candidate for hip replacement. Basically he said that I have moderate arthritis of the hip that is likely to cause pain that will come and go, and maybe even disappear entirely. I asked whether Synvisc would help and he said no. He recommended that I lose 10-20 pounds, that I should continue my habit of walking at least a mile a day, that I should avoid high impact exercise like jumping jacks, that moderate exercise is good. However, when I look back, I think he should have spent more time trying to figure out the best medication for treating pain in my particular case. He recommended that for pain I should take NSAIDs like Naproxen or Ibuprofen, but I replied saying my primary care provider has advised me to avoid NSAIDs because my kidneys are borderline. I asked whether Tylenol (not an NSAID) would be appropriate and he said it would relieve pain but would not treat inflammation. I wish that he had gone on -- without any prompting from me -- to try to figure out what would be the best (or least bad) treatment for the pain and inflammation. The only med he came up with was a prescription for cortisone injections if pain becomes too bad. Would have been nice too if he had referred me to appropriate documents advising how best to respond to my condition. That being said, I will go back to him if my problem gets worse. He strikes me as honest and highly competent and not a money grubber.

Was not sure doctor understood my problems.
The office staff was very friendly and they did xrays right there. The Dr was nice and seems very confident. The wait was long but the appointment itself was quick and to the point but did not feel rushed.
