I spent 5 years dealing with constant pain from a fractured sesamoid bone - orthotics, boots, multiple podiatrists even an orthopedic surgeon, nothing worked. The pain was nonstop throbbing and pulsing, and I had to completely change my workouts and lifestyle.
Then my friend referred me to Dr. Mwando and everything changed. From the first appointment, he explained my options clearly, answered every questions and gave me total confidence. He performed surgery to remove my medial sesamoid and repair the lateral, and my recovery was unbelievably smooth. Walking the next day and weaning back in a shoe within 3 weeks.
He’s patient, thorough, personable and even helped me navigate insurance. I only wish I found him sooner. If you’re dealing with a sesamoid injury or any kind of foot injury/complications, go see Dr. Mwando - you won’t regret it!

Dr. John Mwando is a foot and ankle surgeon with extensive training in wound care and diabetic limb savage. Dr. Mwando attended the University of Nairobi, Kenya and earned his medical degree with concentration in infectious disease. After moving to the United States, he attended the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, graduating with honors. Dr. Mwando completed a 3 year residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Mwando is an attending physician at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Fifth Avenue Surgery Center, and Westchester Medical Center.
Dr. Mwando is very committed to his patients well-being and is extensively trained in foot and ankle surgery with emphasis on wound care and diabetic limb salvage. He is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. Outside of medicine, Dr. Mwando’s other interests include a love of soccer.

Dr. Mwando seemed very knowledgeable about my issue. (I have two rapidly-growing bunions, one on each foot.) He was able to show me x-rays of each of my feet to help me better understand the problem with the way my big toe bones were growing, and though it certainly caught me off guard to have to anticipate surgery in my first visit, Dr. Mwando seemed to be very honest with me about what it would take to correct the bunions and eliminate my consistent pain and discomfort as a result - he went through the time I'd need to take off for each procedure/recovery, anticipated pain levels, long-term results, and even insurance specifics.

Dr. Mwando has a very charismatic personality which makes his bedside manner very comforting. He is also very skilled and knowledgeable with his craft.
I went to see him for a blistering fungal infection on my foot that a previous surgeon and separately, a dermatologist could not correctly diagnose and treat. Fast forward 2 whole months, discomfort and steadily growing weary about the situation, I finally found Dr. Mwando. He educated me about the problem, treated it immediately and prescribed the best cure for it. I saw results overnight! It's a few days since our initial appointment, and the infection is going away with the area healing quite nicely which very positively highlights his wound-specialist capabilities.
Definitely book him. No disappointments. Seen immediately each time since my first appointment.
Rapport, professionalism and desirable results are important to me, and Dr. Mwando lived up to my expectations. Thank you!
