Kristen Hunkin, PhD, MSN, PMHNP-BC, known as Erica, is a dual board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health and Family Nurse Practitioner. Raised in rural Tennessee, her early experiences caring for animals fostered a grounded, compassionate approach to health and human connection.
Erica’s academic journey reflects a deep commitment to science and behavioral health. She earned a BA in Biological Sciences and an MS in Marine Chemical Ecology from The University of Mississippi, then completed a PhD in Behavioral Neuroendocrinology at North Carolina State University, where she researched how hormones influence brain function and behavior. Driven by her growing interest in mental health, Erica later earned an MSN from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a PMHNP certificate from Johns Hopkins University.
She has delivered holistic, evidence-based psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults in community clinics, telehealth settings, and military populations. Her clinical expertise includes mood and psychotic disorders, PTSD, ADHD, autism, traumatic brain injury, and anxiety. She strongly supports a psychotherapy-first model, emphasizing personalized, collaborative care plans and using medication support when clinically appropriate.
Erica believes in meeting clients where they are, fostering trust, resilience, and long-term healing through a person-centered approach. She values multidisciplinary collaboration and sees team-based care as vital to positive outcomes.
