Dr. Melissa Johnson is a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of clinical experience, including provision of brief and long-term psychotherapy to adults and couples. She has a strong clinical background in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma. She enjoys working with issues related to gender and sexual diversity, dysfunctional relationship patterns, challenges related to life transitions, and bi/multicultural identity issues.
Dr. Johnson works from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective, and integrates cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, and mindfulness techniques depending on individual needs. She believes that the primary goal of therapy is to develop a deeper understanding of oneself, including greater awareness of automatic and/or problematic patterns of behaving and relating to others. It is through self-exploration that individuals become aware of the “blind spots” that keep them stuck in dysfunctional and/or unfulfilling relationships, jobs, and life situations. Further, it is through increased self-awareness that individuals gain the freedom to make changes that will allow them to experience more fulfilling lives.
Dr. Johnson’s approach to psychotherapy is relational, collaborative, active, and nonjudgmental. She believes that a safe, authentic, and trusting therapeutic relationship plays a key role in the healing, learning, and growing process. Additionally, she encourages patients to use the therapeutic relationship as a laboratory to safely “experiment” with new ways of communicating and interacting.
