More about Dr. Nathaniel Kuhn, MD

My psychiatry practice is devoted almost entirely to a form of psychotherapy called Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), which I have found it to be remarkably effective for a wide range of psychological and health-related issues. However, it’s not for everyone, and so before meeting together it’s helpful to have a brief phone conversation to get a sense of whether we should have an initial appointment, and, how long it should be. If you book a 50-minute appointment through ZocDoc, I will try to reach you beforehand at the number you give. ISTDP involves helping people to face uncomfortable feelings, in order to resolve problems that people create for themselves by avoiding and/or mis-processing their emotions. I practice ISTDP because it is highly effective and also relatively rapid, as therapy goes. Insurance will generally cover initial appointments booked through ZocDoc, but ISTDP involves a 2-3 hour “trial therapy,” which is generally only partially covered by insurance. After that we would usually meet weekly for 50-minute sessions. I completed the Harvard-Longwood Psychiatry Residency in 1996 and spent most of the next decade working closely with Dr. Leigh McCullough, including as Assistant Director of her Psychotherapy Research Program at Harvard and as second author of "Treating Affect Phobia: A Manual for Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy." Since 2008, I have been studying, teaching, and writing about ISTDP. I am a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School, and teach Short-Term Therapy to the Harvard-Longwood psychiatry residents.
