More about Dr. Philip Lister, MD
The key ingredient for effective psychotherapy is the establishment of an alliance, built on trust and mutual respect. With this foundation, we can explore present difficulties, their roots in the past, and their manifestations - whether in relationships with loved ones, work relationships, feelings about oneself, difficulty with impulses, inhibitions, or mood. In addition to detailing life in the present and past, an openness to considerations of one's inner life - dreams and daydreams - can be of great value, in achieving self-awareness. Our relationship in therapy offers an invaluable window into how our hopes and fears influence our behavior.
I love working with adults and with children of all ages. Psychoanalytic training informs my perspective, although I am keenly aware of the need for efficiency, and do not allow therapy to languish. Employing a developmental perspective, I believe "we are all the ages we have ever been."
My practice is informed by personal experiences. I benefited enormously from personal psychoanalysis in my twenties, from couples counseling in the context of the death of a child in my forties, and from EMDR in my fifties, after a traumatic loss. My tools and capacities are forged from these experiences.
