Dr. Speken is a psychiatrist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of depression, anxiety, and a number of other psychiatric conditions. He has a special interest in psychosomatic conditions. Specifically, Dr. Speken provides treatment options including psychotherapeutic approaches (Jungian oriented), medication management, and neuronal treatment utilizing QEEG and Neuro-Biofeedback. His goal is to help people gain control over their lives and optimize their potential.
Dr. Speken earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, Montefiore Medical Center, and his residency at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He is currently a Voluntary Attending at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. In an effort to expand his clinical knowledge, he completed Neuro-Biofeedback training as well as Acupuncture and Electrotherapeutics training. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in the psychiatric community and has been affiliated with various hospitals in New York. He is the co-founder of the Fordham-Tremont Community Mental Health Center and a long-time member of the New York City Doctor's Council. Dr. Speken has over 42 years of experience helping individuals achieve their psychiatric goals.

Dr. Speken is a fantastic, experienced physician & also is really easy to talk to. I see him for medication management & I have found that he is very good therapist as well. I always look forward to seeing him & talking about issues that I need help dealing with. I would recommend him as either a psychiatrist or a therapist/analyst who can see patients as often as needed; be it weekly, bi monthly or even just monthly if your very stable.

Dr. Speken is kind, compassionate, and is a WEALTH of knowledge.
It is clear that he not only knows what he is talking about in general, but takes the time to really understand the concerns of the patient and tailors his approach to the individual.
He goes out of his way to make sure everything is thoroughly explained, that the pros and cons of any approach are discussed and documented, and that he fully understands patient background and extenuating circumstances that might be missed by other lazy or “fast” clinicians.
I would recommend Dr. Speken to anyone who takes his or her mental health seriously.

Ralph is great. He will spend 3 to 4 times longer with you then a younger physician. He isn’t there to just right scripts. He really wants to figure out the best treatment regiment for you. That’s a huge benefit in the psych space.

It was ok.... I mean, he was great at identifying my problem and was pretty spot on with his assessment.
But before introducing himself he asked for my insurance card. Then he spent the first half of the appointment asking me questions to fill out my insurance information.... not the best of first impressions.

Before I could even introduce myself the doctor asked for my insurance card and made it clear that it was urgent I find it before we continue. He then told me they don't accept card (strange) and I'd have to find an ATM afterwards to pay--cool. Overall, it was fine, I got the medication I need but he's not very warm and fuzzy. Did not take too much time to get to know me, but rather talked at me and I felt a bit belittled. Would not particularly recommend, I've definitely had more engaging and helpful psychiatrists.

I can’t say enough nice things about Dr. Speken. 10 minutes into our first appointment, I felt at ease, understood, taken seriously, and relieved. It’s like he knew me my whole life. He is so experienced and knowledgeable- he is so so so intelligent. It was a pleasure meeting him and speaking with him. I will continue to see him.
I also like that he is fine with texting- his office isn’t exactly around the corner from where I live or work, so it is convenient for me!
