Getting to know Dr. Swarnalata Debbarma
Dr. Debbarma is double board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine and is also certified in mindfulness therapy. Prior to joining Talkiatry, she worked as an attending psychiatrist and teaching faculty at an academic hospital. She has experience managing diverse patients, ranging from chronic severe mental illness and dual diagnosis to crisis management and high-functioning outpatient populations.
Dr. Debbarma is an international medical graduate from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, India, where she earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. She completed postgraduate training in Psychiatry and Family Medicine and pursued a Master of Public Health from Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University to better understand U.S. public health and preventive care. Driven by her interest in global health, she worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Global Health at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Dr. Debbarma completed her psychiatry residency at Cooper University Hospital, where she also served as chief resident.
Before moving to the U.S., Dr. Debbarma worked as a medical officer in the government hospital system. She has years of experience treating patients from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Intrigued by the human mind and behavior, she chose to specialize in psychiatry, focusing on "wholeness" by understanding the whole person, not just their symptoms.
Her treatment approach incorporates the bio-psycho-sociocultural model and patient-centered care. She offers medication management and supportive therapy and, based on clinical need, incorporates CBT, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing. Dr. Debbarma has a special interest in women's mental health and cultural psychiatry.
