Dr. Richard Garfinkel is a graduate of the Honors program of the University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his studies at the New York University School of Medicine where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1988. Following this education he completed his internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital at the University of Michigan, served his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan, where he was named the Chief Resident of Ophthalmology. He then followed this training with a two-year Vitreoretinal Diseases Fellowship at the Wayne State University School of Medicine Kresge Eye Institute associated with the William Beaumont Hospital.
Dr. Garfinkel is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds licenses from the State of Virginia, the State of Maryland, and the District of Columbia. He has hospital appointments at Washington Hospital Center, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Silver Spring Ophthalmology, and the Friendship Surgery Center. Additionally, he is a clinical assistant professor at Georgetown University Hospital and has a courtesy appointment at the Inova Fairfax Hospital. He belongs to eight professional organizations.
Dr. Garfinkel is widely published with nine publications and over thirty abstracts and presentations to his credit. He is also active in clinical research having been the principle investigator in nine research efforts and the sub-investigator in over fifteen studies. Among his many honors are Honor Awards from the Society of Retinal Specialist and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has been named a Washingtonian Top Doctor, a Best Doctor in America, and has received the Walter R. Parker Resident Teaching Award.
