Dr. Rita Baker, PhD

Psychotherapist
CO
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (CO #1165) located in the State of Colorado. My approach to individual therapy is intelligent, evidence-based, compassionate, and strategically tailored for the individual. I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), helping clients identify and reframe unhelpful thought patterns to support meaningful behavioral change. Eclectic in that I draw from multiple approaches. However, I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), assisting clients/patients in identifying their negative or unhelpful thinking and developing more positive thought regimes and approaching life and thinking in a more positive and meaningful way. I have worked with a large number of people of all ages possessing a medically-related condition, either dealing with a chronic condition or adjusting to the sudden insult of acquiring a deteriorating medical diagnosis. My focus is on trying to adapt daily life to the highest level possible, which might include family members dealing with their loved one.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a warm and empathetic provider. I have been told by clients that they feel very comfortable talking with and sharing information with me. I was greatly influenced by my group of girlfriends in high school. The brightest of our group had a nervous breakdown (to use a generally known term) and was not recovering via the best psychiatric and psychological care in existence. I was mortified and changed my college major from accounting to psychology and have been working in the World of Psychology ever since.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Goal setting varies with the individual and what they would prefer at the time. As time progresses, goal setting may change depending upon the individual and what are realistic goals for them. I typically ask if they have any questions that they would like answered. In my years and years of practice, I have had only one person say that they did not like me because I have a southern accent. She just didn't like me for whatever reason (or reasons), and that is her prerogative, and we went our separate ways. I do have residual aspects of my childhood (I grew up in South Carolina and still have the residual accent of my homeland!).
