More about Dr. Robert P. Murphy, MD
Dr. Murphy is a graduate of St. Louis University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Subsequently he attended Northwestern University Medical School where he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree. His post-doctoral training included an internship at Milwaukee County General Hospital, a residency in internal medicine at the University of California at Irvine, a residency in ophthalmology at Stanford University Medical Center, and fellowships at The Wilmer Institute, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions with Retinal Vascular Center and Vitreo-Retinal Service. Dr. Murphy also served as a Captain in the Medical Corps following his internship.
Dr. Murphy is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Retina Specialist with the Retina Group of Washington. He has served on more than twenty domestic and international committees and boards. He also belongs to more than a dozen professional societies and organizations.
He has been very active in research and has contributed frequently to the scientific body of knowledge through his own writings and reviews. He has served as a scientific journal reviewer for Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Retina, and The American Journal of Ophthalmology and he is on the editorial board of Lasers and Light in Ophthalmology. His vast record of work includes fourteen grants and contracts from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association. He has edited three books, appeared in Letters to the Editor in multiple scientific journals, co-authored a teaching module, produced ten audiovisual presentations, and made one-hundred and sixty-six contributions to scientific publications. Dr. Murphy has been honored throughout his career including a Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Who’s Who in Medicine.
