Robert Yanagisawa, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and is the Program Director of the Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The program has built a reputation for training the most outstanding endocrinologists and more than half of the graduates hold academic titles across the country. Dr. Yanagisawa has also made significant contributions in advancing global medical partnerships as the Vice President of the Japanese Medical Society of America. With the Mount Sinai Global Health Training Program, he has established a new training site in Japan for Disaster Medical Sciences in Fukushima, following a nuclear power plant fallout involving evacuation of over 110,000 people in 2011. Under his mentorship, students have been awarded Blue Ribbon Award at the Annual Medical Student Research Day and another student will receive M.D. with a distinction in research. Dr. Yanagisawa has introduced a new multidisciplinary approach with collaborations between disaster psychiatry and radiation biology for a long-term post disaster recovery in Japan. He co-leads 3/11 and 9/11 Survivor Exchange Program as a Global Health outreach project. The innovative efforts have been commended by former First Lady of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Reconstruction Agency of Japan, as well as Governor of Fukushima. Clinically, Dr. Yanagisawa focuses on thyroid and metabolism. He is certified and performs in-office neck ultrasonography for the diagnosis of thyroid disease, and for surveillance for recurrent disease in thyroid cancer patients. He also co-directs the Endocrine Clinic for the Mount Sinai Hospital.
