Sunjay Berdia, M.D., M.S., is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with additional fellowship training in hand, microvascular, and upper extremity surgery. Before entering medicine, Dr. Berdia had a brief career in the computer industry. He completed his undergraduate education at the Vanderbilt University in computer science and electrical engineering and graduated with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. During his career in the computer industry, Dr. Berdia developed Da Vinci eMAIL which subsequently won PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award. He was also instrumental in Data General winning a $47 million contract with Sprint International. He discovered, however, that his personal fulfillment required making a positive difference in people’s lives, not just their businesses. As such, Dr, Berdia took premedical courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while in their computer science graduate program with a subspecialty interest in artificial intelligence. He then entered the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. While in medical school, Dr. Berdia developed artificial intelligence software that could automatically determine polyethylene wear of total hip arthroplasties using digitized radiographs. He not only received a patent on his algorithm but also was one of the few winners of the University of Chicago Student Summer Research Poster Forum Award. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, distinguishing the top 10% of medical students in the country. In addition, he graduated medical school with honors.
