More about Dr. Susan Shavin, PhD
I am a warm and compassionate individual with an enormous appreciation for the challenges we face in life. I chose the field of psychology for my career while still quite young (age 14) when a favorite aunt who was returning to school to do graduate work in the field described Psychology as “the study of human behavior”. I was growing up in a large extended family amidst parents who were medical professionals, two siblings, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and kind and devoted grandparents who regularly brought us all together, and the possibility of understanding human behavior was undeniably compelling.
My major as an undergraduate at Western Reserve University was Psychology. I had two practica working with children during those years which increased my interest in and enthusiasm for the field.
I applied to study in the graduate program at the California School of Professional Psychology because the curriculum was extremely original and innovative for its time; as one of the first freestanding professional schools of psychology, all faculty were required to be practicing professionals and every student engaged in many hours of supervised field work throughout all the years of study. At graduation,
my dissertation conducting and comparing two clinical interventions to address the side-effects chemotherapy for women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, was one of five honored for excellence. It was a difficult and very fulfilling project.
