Who is an ENT doctor?

Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctors are certified healthcare professionals who can diagnose and treat issues related to these areas of the body.

According to some historians, this specialty is one of the oldest in the United States, dating back to the 1800s when doctors recognized that the ears, nose, and throat were interconnected and required specialized knowledge. Both adults and children can seek treatment from an ENT specialist, who can help with a wide range of issues, such as :

  • Hearing problems
  • Adenoids and tonsils
  • Thyroid issues
  • Sinus problems
  • Larynx issues
  • Mouth and throat problems
  • Ear tubes
  • Ear surgeries
  • Head, neck, and throat cancers
  • Reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries of the head and neck

What is otolaryngology?

Over the past 50 years, the study of otolaryngology has broadened its focus to include the head and neck. The word "otolaryngology" is a shortened form of "otorhinolaryngology." Otolaryngologists are uniquely qualified to treat several conditions, such as hearing disorders, chronic sinusitis affecting around 35 million adults in the United States annually, and other nasal issues and allergies. The diagnosis and treatment of upper esophageal and laryngeal diseases, including vocal difficulties and swallowing problems, also fall under the purview of otolaryngologists. They can also treat various diseases and disorders affecting the face, head, and neck, such as infectious diseases, trauma, deformities, and cancers.

Sometimes, otolaryngology may overlap with other medical specialties, including dermatology and oral surgery. The area of otolaryngology encompasses different specialized fields, and some otolaryngologists choose to focus on one particular area. These areas include:

  • Ear (otology/neurotology): Our sense of hearing and equilibrium are essential daily. ENT doctors can diagnose and treat diverse issues, including ear canal infections, hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, and head, face, and neck discomfort.

  • Nose (rhinology): Our noses help us breathe by filtering away dust, pollen, and other irritants. ENT doctors cure more than only allergies; they can also correct a deviated septum, treat rhinitis and sinusitis, perform sinus surgery, clear a blocked nose, and remove malignancies from the skull base or elsewhere in the head.

  • Disorders of the throat (laryngology): These disorders can make swallowing or talking difficult and adversely affect individuals' quality of life. Sore throat, hoarseness, gastrointestinal reflux diseases, infections, throat tumors, and problems with the airway and vocal cords are some of the conditions that an ENT doctor can help with.

  • Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery: Any trauma to the face and the consequent alterations in facial appearance due to accidents, injuries, congenital disabilities, or the adverse effects of medical treatments can be upsetting. Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery can solve these issues. Cleft palates, sagging eyelids, hair loss, ear deformities, facial paralysis, facial trauma reconstruction, head and neck cancer reconstruction, and aesthetic facial surgeries are all conditions that ENT specialists in facial plastic surgery handle.

  • Pediatrics otolaryngology: Children's changing bodies and expanding senses require individualized care. Ear infections, tonsil and adenoid infections, breathing difficulties, asthma, and allergies are just a few of the many conditions that ENT doctors can treat.

Otolaryngology is among the oldest medical specialties in the United States, with treatment guidelines established by organized ENTs in 1896 and followed by pediatric and primary care clinicians ever since.

What are the educational qualifications of an ENT specialist?

Applicants seeking full certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology must complete a four-year college program, followed by four years of medical school. Subsequently, they must undergo a five-year residency program, during which the first year includes primary surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, and anesthesia training.

Afterward, ENT residents receive a progressive education in their specialty for an additional 51 months, with the final year spent as a chief resident at an approved institution. Upon completion of the program, aspiring otolaryngologists can take the board certification examination, which consists of a written and oral test. In addition to obtaining certification, ENT specialists can pursue a fellowship or a comprehensive one or two-year training program concentrating on a subspecialty.

When should you see an ENT specialist?

Primary care physicians can often assist with ear-, nose-, and throat-related problems. It is especially true if you are experiencing a short-term condition such as a sinus infection, sore throat, or ear infection. However, there are instances where seeing an otolaryngologist or an ear, nose, and throat doctor near you may be a better idea. These include :

  • Frequent occurrences of symptoms such as nasal congestion
  • Sinus pressure, or a runny nose,
  • Recurring infections like ear infections
  • Sinus infections or strep throat
  • Repeated episodes of vertigo or dizziness
  • Changes in hearing
  • Wheezing or hoarseness that persists
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • The development of a visible lump or bump in your face or neck that doesn't disappear or enlarges
  • Conditions that affect your ability to sleep, such as sleep apnea or snoring

How to keep your ear, nose, and throat healthy?

Here are the simple ways to keep your ears, nose, and throat healthy:

  • Ear

Wear proper hearing protectors if you work in a loud environment or if your ears are exposed to loud sounds. They protect your eardrums and prevent common hearing problems.

Clean your ears regularly. You can seek the help of a physician to remove earwax. It prevents ear infections, improves hearing, and keeps your ears healthy.

Get your allergies treated, protect yourself from contagious respiratory diseases, and stay away from cigarette smoke to avoid an ear infection.

  • Nose

Flush your nose and sinuses regularly with lukewarm filtered water. It removes all the dust and pollens in the nasal cavity and prevents infections and allergic reactions. If you suffer from chronic sinusitis or allergies, get a proper diagnosis and treatment from a qualified ENT doctor.

If you have a terrible cold, use an over-the-counter nasal spray to open your nasal passages. Avoid exposure to various allergens that cause allergies. Remove all the allergens like mold, dust, or pollens from your surroundings to prevent multiple allergies. Avoid keeping a pet if you are allergic to pet dander, as it will worsen the condition.

  • Throat

Drink water regularly to avoid a dry throat. Water is helpful for the body and ensures that your vocal cords and throat are hydrated and in good health. Avoid smoking and alcohol as they are unhealthy for the throat and cause various throat disorders. If you have problems swallowing food or speech, see an experienced ENT doctor.

Viral or bacterial infections mainly cause a sore throat. Maintain good hygiene to prevent harmful germs from entering your body. Exercise daily to improve your immune system. Avoid prolonged exposure to polluted air to prevent throat infections. Seek proper diagnosis and treatment if the sore throat doesn't heal in a few days.

Hearing loss statistics for children in Illinois

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more than 98% of newborns are checked for hearing loss in the USA. In 2019, nearly 6,000 infants were identified with permanent hearing loss. The prevalence of hearing loss among newborns screened was 1.7 per 1,000 babies. Unfortunately, some infants who require additional testing or early intervention do not receive these vital follow-up services.

As per the 2021 annual report on Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) published by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the number of infants diagnosed with permanent hearing loss stood at around 307 in 2020. This number has remained consistent for the past three years, at 316 in 2019 and 302 in 2018. It also showed that approximately 30%, or around three out of every ten infants, did not follow up, failed to pass their final screening, and did not complete a diagnostic evaluation.

According to the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC), approximately 180,000 newborn babies in Illinois have their hearing screened, and 500 children are identified with hearing loss yearly. Hearing loss is considered third among the most common physical health conditions (after arthritis and heart disease) and can occur from birth to adulthood. Genetic reasons cause approximately 50 – 60% of hearing loss in babies.
