How can I find an OB-GYN in Clearwater who sees patients during the weekend?

Zocdoc let's you see real-time availability for OB-GYNs in Clearwater. Many OB-GYNs offer appointments on Saturdays and Sundays.

Who are OB-GYNs, and when should you visit them?

Doctors specializing in preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions found in female reproductive organs are known as OB-GYNs. These healthcare practitioners have a deep understanding of obstetrics and gynecology.

Obstetrics involves the study of pregnancy and childbirth. On the other hand, gynecology studies typical structures and diseases found in the female reproductive system, pre- and post-pregnancy. Some common gynecological issues include menstruation problems, fertility challenges, hormone disorders, and sexually transmitted infections.

Some problems with menstruation are changes in the frequency and volume of the menstrual cycle and intolerable pain. There's also cramping, bleeding, pain experienced during intercourse and urination, uncontrollable mood swings, uterine cysts, and fibroids. Sexually active women visit OB-GYNs to learn about contraception, sterilization, ways to have safe sex, and methods to prevent sexually transmitted infections. OB-GYNs treat urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted infections. They administer vaccinations against the human papillomavirus.

For women trying to conceive, OB-GYNs provide infertility treatment, prenatal care, and safe planning. They advise pregnant women about diet and exercise, perform pregnancy ultrasounds, and perform genetic tests to monitor pregnancy. Before delivery, they assist mothers in choosing the best labor and birthing option. After delivery, OB-GYNs educate mothers on the importance and methods of breastfeeding. They also diagnose and treat postpartum depression.

In women going through menopause, OB-GYNs address issues such as hot flashes, reduced libido, bone loss, vaginal dryness, and incontinence.

What are the steps to becoming an OB-GYN in the U.S.?

To become a licensed OB-GYN in the U.S., one must complete

  • Four years of undergraduate education
  • Four years of medical school
  • Four years of residency in OB-GYN
  • Clear board certification examination conducted by the ACOG (American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology)
  • Obtain a state license by completing the requirements for the state where they wish to practice.

What are the specialty areas of an OB-GYN?

While most OB-GYNs (approximately 90 percent) practice as generalists, some choose to delve into various subspecialties. These specialized areas encompass a diverse spectrum of women's health needs and include:

Maternal-fetal medicine: Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are crucial in caring for expectant mothers facing high-risk pregnancies and associated medical challenges. Patients seek the expertise of these specialists when dealing with conditions such as chronic or gestational high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, blood clotting disorders, or the threat of premature labor. Their comprehensive knowledge and experience make them the go-to professionals for managing complicated pregnancies and ensuring maternal and fetal well-being.

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility: OB-GYNs specializing in reproductive endocrinology focus on the intricate interplay of hormones and the endocrine system, particularly regarding fertility issues. Couples struggling to conceive often turn to these specialists for guidance and treatment. Reproductive endocrinologists are adept at performing advanced assisted reproduction procedures, including in vitro fertilization, gamete intrafallopian transfer, zygote intrafallopian transfer, and embryo transfer. Their expertise is instrumental in helping individuals and couples achieve their dream of parenthood.

Gynecologic oncology: Gynecologic oncologists dedicate themselves to preventing, diagnosing, and managing cancers affecting the female reproductive system. This subspecialty encompasses the management of malignancies involving the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and vulva. These specialists employ a multidisciplinary approach to provide comprehensive care, offering patients the best possible treatment outcomes.

Female pelvic medicine and reproductive surgery: Surgeons specializing in female pelvic medicine and reproductive surgery are skilled in addressing various urinary tract disorders and conditions affecting the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor, a crucial network of muscles and connective tissue beneath a woman's pelvis, can weaken due to pregnancy, aging, or specific medical issues. These experts can tackle concerns related to urinary or fecal incontinence, bladder pain, overactive bladder, vaginal or urinary tract infections, and pelvic organ prolapse. Their interventions aim to enhance women's quality of life by restoring pelvic health and function.

Whether you seek the expertise of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, reproductive endocrinologist, gynecologic oncologist, or a surgeon specializing in female pelvic medicine and reproductive surgery, finding the right OB-GYN near you with the necessary expertise is crucial to address your specific health needs.

Standard screening procedures that OB-GYNs perform

OB-GYNs perform a range of screening and preventive exams and procedures, such as pap smears, mammograms, pelvic exams, and breast exams.

  • Pap smear

A pap smear is a procedure used for screening and detecting cervical cancer in women. The early diagnosis of cervical cancer increases the chances of its cure. A pap smear requires patients to lay horizontally on their backs and bend their knees. Then the doctor gently inserts an instrument called a speculum to expand the vaginal walls and get a clear view of the cervix at the bottom end of the uterus. After this, a device called a spatula collects samples of cervical cells. Pap smears are generally suggested every three years for women between 21 and 65.

Common factors that increase the risk of developing cervical cancer include:

  • Previous detection of precancerous cells in the cervix.
  • A history of HIV infection.
  • Women with weak immune systems.

Women at higher risk should have more frequent Pap smear tests. The immune system may weaken because of chemotherapy treatment, chronic use of corticosteroids, and after organ transplant surgery.

  • Mammogram

A mammogram is a procedure used to obtain an X-ray of the breasts. This procedure screens women for breast cancer and other diagnostic purposes. A mammogram helps in detecting signs of breast cancer even before the tumor presents other symptoms.

Mammograms can be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional. They help in non-surgical investigation of any breast alterations, such as a lump in the breast, pain in the breast, changes in the skin around the breasts, thickening of nipples, and unusual discharge from the nipples. These checks reduce the chances of fatality from breast cancer.

  • Pelvic exam

A pelvic examination evaluates the status of a woman's reproductive organs, such as the vulva, cervix, vagina, uterus, ovaries, rectum, and pelvis. Pelvic exams help find early signs of ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, sexually transmitted infections, and cervical cancer. During pregnancy, they help doctors in monitoring the health of the mother and the baby. During a pelvic exam, OB-GYNs evaluate the pelvic region externally and internally. They check for sores, swellings, and redness in the pelvic area. The internal examination involves inserting a speculum to open the vaginal walls and then evaluating the cervix.

  • Breast examination

An OB-GYN performs a clinical breast examination to detect abnormalities in the breasts. Visual inspection of the breasts involves checking for their appearance in various postures, such as arms over the head, arms hanging by the sides, and hands pressed against the hips. The doctors check for rashes or dumplings on the breasts' skin and examine the nipples for fluid discharge.

During the manual examination of the breasts, OB-GYNs use the pads of their gloved fingers and gently press the breasts, underarms, and collarbone regions. They check for any abnormal lumps, ridges, or bumps. If they discover a lump in any of these areas, they evaluate it further and study its shape, size, and texture.

What can you anticipate during an appointment with an OB-GYN near you?

At your OB-GYN appointment, the medical assistant will first take your vital signs and gather your medical and surgical history and information about your allergies and current medications.

Then, the clinician will ask you some questions about any specific concerns you want to discuss during your visit. Additionally, the clinician may ask more detailed questions about you, your family, your health history, and your experiences.

Your clinician may discuss or address the following topic areas, or you can ask questions about:

  • Your overall well-being and happiness
  • Any physical changes you have questions about, such as a lump in your breast
  • Your menstrual cycle history
  • Past obstetric history, including the number of pregnancies and complications
  • Past gynecological history, including abnormal pap smears, fibroids, ovarian cysts, cancer history, sexually transmitted infections, endometriosis, and menopause/perimenopause transition
  • Pelvic pain, vulvar and vaginal changes you may be experiencing
  • Contraception, fertility issues, and reproductive plans
  • Your sexual activities, including oral, vaginal, and anal sex, and history of sexual assault or abuse
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction

If you are over 18, all the information you share is confidential. If you are under 18, discussing confidentiality with your clinician is essential. Most, if not all, of what you say to your provider can be kept confidential. A physical exam may be recommended depending on your history and concerns. Typical components of the exam may include a pelvic exam, breast exam (including a Pap smear for cervical cancer screening), and an ultrasound.

When should teens and preteens start seeing an OB-GYN? What can they expect?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that adolescents have their first routine OB-GYN visit between ages 13 and 15. This initial appointment typically involves meeting the provider, general health counseling, and discussing any concerns.

Teens and preteens may not always feel comfortable talking to parents, guardians, or other adults about topics like periods, sex, and birth control. As a result, they often turn to friends or the internet, where they may receive inaccurate information.

Building a trusting relationship with an OB-GYN allows teens and preteens to ask personal questions in a safe environment. Access to reliable information and guidance benefits them now and as they grow. If a pelvic exam is needed for a pressing health concern in the future, an existing relationship with an OB-GYN can help reduce anxiety about the procedure.

The first visit is not just an opportunity for teens and preteens to ask questions—it also allows the provider to offer essential, age-appropriate education.

Common topics discussed during the first visit may include:

  • Basic hygiene
  • Normal vs. abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Puberty
  • Menstruation

It is natural for teens and preteens to feel anxious, nervous, or even fearful about wellness procedures, including their first pelvic or breast exam. While these exams may be necessary in certain situations, they typically become routine at age 21. When an exam is required earlier, seeing an OB-GYN is beneficial since they specialize in providing the best care for children, adolescents, and young adults. Taking your child to an OB-GYN during their developmental years helps them recognize the value of routine wellness and preventive care early on.
