Dr. Clarissa Mulligan Attara, Ph.D., LPC, LMHC, LCADC, ACS (she/they) is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor in New Jersey, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York. Affectionately known as “Dr. C”, they foster a safe environment for their clients to promote healing and personal growth. Dr. C understands that no one person’s needs are the same and that each client should feel validated and supported in the therapeutic process. Dr. C helps her clients manage the challenges so often experienced during this time. Whether increasing coping skills for anxiety and/or depressive symptoms, exploring identity, navigating school, relationships, and self-care or gaining confidence in advocating for themselves, Dr. C is there to support and guide each client. Working with teens and adults to increase self-compassion and identify negative patterns keeping them stuck, Dr. C assists her clients to reduce their anxiety and improve their mood. Dr. C has expertise in helping young people who are exploring sexuality and gender identity and brings their knowledge and experience to support this journey. They have also worked extensively with clients struggling with substance use issues and addiction, supporting them in their recovery and on their path to wellness and self-discovery. Using evidence-based interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, mindfulness practices, and person-centered therapy approaches, Dr. C collaborates with each client to discover what works for them. They approach their work with clients from a multicultural counseling lens, recognizing the very real differences that inform values, choices, and behaviors. They practice affirmative therapy and utilize this when treating individuals in the LGBTQIA+ communities.
