Psychotherapist
2602 Eric Lane, Ste D-3, Burlington, NC
Hi, my name is Derrick, and as a licensed therapist, my goal is to create a safe, accepting, and comfortable environment that allows you to grow in self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-sufficiency. I provide mental health and substance abuse services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from all ethnic backgrounds and nationalities. Initially, we will work together to form a mutually desired relationship and focus on counseling by setting goals, which we will assess throughout the process. My approach includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Reality Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. These techniques allow effective interaction with individuals from elementary school through adulthood. I also believe in recognizing the spiritual aspect of life alongside psychological and physiological aspects. Occasionally, I may incorporate spiritual guidance with your full consent. I earned my Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Winston-Salem State University in December 2011. After passing the national certification exam in fall 2011, the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification granted me certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). I was licensed in Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in March 2023 and adhere to Virginia Department of Health codes of ethics. I am also a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) under the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB) and follow their Code of Ethics. With over twelve years in the substance abuse profession, coupled with lived experience, I bring a unique perspective. Additionally, I hold professional status as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) from the NC State Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based practice that is shown to be effective in treating a myriad of mental health issues. I strive to provide thought-provoking sessions that inspire the resolution of unhelpful thinking patterns. Our therapy sessions will be a collaborative effort in which you, the individual, are the expert who is tasked with teaching me about you and my job as your therapist is to help you elicit the solutions that you already possess internally.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
