Getting to know Emily Ally

My name is Emily Ally, LMSW. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York who completed my graduate experience at New York University's Silver School of Social Work, earning a Master's in Social Work. I am certified in TF-CBT and LIFT (LGBTQ+ Institute for Family Therapy). At Extending Roots, I utilize a fusion of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Creative Arts, and a Mindfulness approach to assist my clients with addressing their life challenges as they arise. I am passionate about providing holistic and spiritual care to our clients; to that end, I am committed to maintaining my clinical skills as we learn from each other in sessions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client would be working with me to identify “roots” - core problems/objectives that are deeply connected to one’s actions, thoughts, and emotional awareness. By identifying “root issues” we are able to explore, identify, and address your objectives in treatment. I am a spiritual person (nonsecular) where I am excited to share interventions like: art prompts, psychotherapy interventions (inner child work, shadow work, ego deaths). I have a primary focus to clients who are identifying as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+, where we work on processing complex trauma and generational trauma.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I use psychodynamic and psychoanalytic interventions where we discuss current challenges, attachment, identity, and your personal history. Therapy is a process that takes time and I am dedicated to working with you through struggles like depression, anxiety, grief, and chronic illness. I encourage my clients to give me feedback about sessions regularly. My therapeutic style is interactive, collaborative, and caring where I am dedicated to tailor sessions to my client’s unique needs.

Emily is a wonderful therapist! Her insight and presence truly helped me through a lot of moments I didn’t know I needed to heal from. Her direct approach and communication style is an example i strive for in my own life and learning from her experiences and intuition has brought so much clarity and confidence into my life; how i choose to respond, make decisions and move in a tumultuous world. As an eldest daughter, I’ve struggled with saying no and boundary setting, but through sessions with Emily, I’m more equipped and aware of the areas of communication where I need to bring attention and work on. Being with Emily for just over two years has truly changed my life for the better. When I was once unwilling to do the hard work, therapy changed my mind about this; there’s always internal work to be done, but it’s not work in the literally sense, it’s character development. Thank you for everything, Emily!
Emily has helped me so much in just two months! She is excellent at creating a safe environment. She knows exactly how to redirect our conversations when it may be getting too overwhelming or I’m getting distracted. She also relates with me and helps me understand my emotions on a deeper level. Our sessions have become such a blessing in my life!

After only three months of therapy, Emily has helped me so much. She’s super easy to talk to and makes me feel so comfortable, which is something I wasn’t able to feel with previous therapists in the past. She gives so much insightful advice and truly cares about her clients. I’ve felt as if I was able to grow and view things differently in such a short amount of time, she has so much patience and doesn’t pressure you to share anything outside of your comfort zone if you don’t want to. I would recommend her to anyone that’s interested in bettering themselves, truly. Such an amazing therapist.
Emily is the voice in my head I never knew I needed. She’s given me so many resources and tools to navigate my issues, while still offering a lighthearted tone to keep the session manageable.
Emily is one of the 1st therapists I ever had that really heard me and listened. She is the best therapist I ever had. I love her therapy style and she has helped me through this period of time in my life dealing with grief PTSD and more. Emily is a great therapist who truly cares and connects with you. I’ve been seeing her for about two years now and I can count on her to listen and help me work through whatever I am going through at the time. She’s truly the best!
Emily is incredible to be with, she stays honest yet kind with me. She makes sure to be stern when she needs to without feeling hostile or demanding. She helps keep me grounded and optimistic and always makes an effort to see me or schedule me in along with willing to work with my school and work schedules.
