John Cotter, LMFT

John Cotter, LMFT

Psychotherapist
VA
Hi there, I'm John! After listening to my client, I offer suggestions on what therapeutic approach might work best for them. I am a pragmatist—if something is working, keep doing it; if not, do something else. My approach includes ACT, CBT, EMDR, DBT, CPT, CBIT, Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, and Supportive Psychotherapy. My focus areas are anxiety, OCD, depression, Tourette's Syndrome, pre-marital and marriage therapy, family therapy, borderline personality disorder, and existential angst. My communication style is supportive and encouraging, but realistic and even challenging if necessary to help facilitate client objectives. My journey to mental healthcare began after high school when I joined the Navy. I then worked in shipyards, utility companies, and business management but never felt fulfilled. An occupational therapist administered a battery of tests to identify my interests and aptitudes and recommended the therapy field. That was 25 years ago, and I will always be grateful for her direction. I hold a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from National University. My goals for you: I prefer that clients set their own goals, or I am happy to work with them to identify what they want to achieve in therapy if they are unsure how to proceed. My first session with you will be with a curious, interested, caring listener who wants the best for you—someone who will not judge you as a person but will seek to help you grow toward the best version of yourself.
