Kat Hammer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 26 years of experience working with youth, adults, and families who have experienced trauma in a variety of settings. Her philosophy of care has been influenced by working in the field of sexual and domestic violence, her training in psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and feminist theories, as well as her own life experience.
Kat understands how trauma influences stress, our bodies, mental health, and safety in the world. She believes that racism, sexism, and LGBTQ phobia can cause people from being authentic, safe, and whole. We all exist in a larger context and our well-being is not in isolation from our relationships and experiences of others. Each of us deserves to know our worth and value.
Kat recognizes that each of us is the expert of our own life. She utilizes a strength-based, person-first practice that assists youth, individuals, and families in developing skills to improve coping, sense of self, and the mitigation of barriers that keep us from experiencing peace and contentment. She believes that therapy requires work and commitment from both parties. Whether it is to manage anxiety, manage a life change, or address trauma, her interventions are tailored to the presenting issues and the goals of the person seeking support.
"All of us struggle," says Kat. "No human can be on this planet and not face challenges. No one is defined by a single action or event. Yet, all of us need a place to feel safe, to feel challenged, to learn to embrace our authentic selves." Kat believes we all deserve someone in our corner when we feel in doubt. While life will always be challenging, Kat believes we find our value, worth, and purpose when we are less afraid and let ourselves embrace who we are in our entirety by recognizing our strengths and forgiving ourselves for our flaws.
